When people picture wartime aircraft, they picture fighters and bombers. Almost no one pictures a helicopter — yet by 1942 Germany was flying a nimble little rotorcraft off the decks of warships, spotting submarines in the Baltic. It was the Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri, and it holds a distinction most histories overlook: it was the world’s first helicopter to reach series production.

Two rotors that should have collided
The Kolibri’s designer, Anton Flettner, solved the helicopter’s hardest early problem — torque — in a startling way. Instead of a tail rotor, he fitted two rotors side by side on masts angled slightly apart, spinning in opposite directions so their blades passed between each other without ever touching. This “intermeshing” layout, or synchropter, cancelled out torque and put all the engine’s power into lift.
It demanded a gearbox machined and assembled with extraordinary precision, but the payoff was remarkable agility. The design that led to the Kolibri was so maneuverable that evaluators struggled to believe it.

A helicopter for the fleet
The Kriegsmarine, which had no aircraft carriers, saw exactly what it needed: a machine small enough to operate from a platform on a cruiser or convoy escort, to scout for submarines and shadow shipping. A Kolibri could take off and land on a tiny deck, hover to observe, and dart away. A handful flew operationally in the Baltic, the Mediterranean and the Aegean, mostly on convoy protection.
But the Kolibri arrived in a collapsing Germany. A thousand were ordered in 1944; Allied bombing wrecked the factories, skilled workers vanished, and by the end of the war only about two dozen had been finished. Most were destroyed to keep them from being captured.
The idea that outlived the war
A few Kolibris were captured by the Americans and Soviets, and Flettner’s intermeshing concept did not die with the Third Reich. Anton Flettner emigrated to the United States, and American engineer Charles Kaman built his own synchropters around the same idea.

Kaman’s K-225 became the world’s first gas-turbine helicopter in 1951, and its descendant, the K-Max heavy-lift “aerial truck,” is still in production today — including an unmanned version that hauled cargo for the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. Every one of them traces its twin, criss-crossing rotors back to a tiny German hummingbird that first buzzed into the air in 1941.
