Ukraine Confirms Its Swedish ASC 890 Radar Plane Is Flying Combat

For four years Ukraine has fought an air war essentially blind above a certain altitude, relying on ground-based radar that cannot see over the horizon and cannot move quickly when it is targeted.

On 5 September the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence confirmed something that had been strongly suspected for months: a Swedish-supplied ASC 890 airborne early warning aircraft has been flying combat missions over Ukraine since March.

It is a converted regional airliner with a rectangular box bolted above the fuselage. It is also, arguably, the single most consequential aircraft Ukraine has received.

What the balance beam does

The Erieye radar sits in a long rectangular fairing above the fuselage rather than in the rotating disc most people associate with airborne early warning. There is nothing spinning inside it. It is an active electronically scanned array that steers its beam electronically, which means it can look in several directions effectively at once and switch between search and track without waiting for a dish to come round.

The practical effect is altitude. A ground radar is limited by the curvature of the Earth; anything low enough is simply below its horizon. Put the same radar at 20,000 feet and that horizon moves out enormously. Cruise missiles and drones flying low to stay hidden from ground sensors become visible from a long way off.

A flying command post, not just a radar

The six-person crew includes a mission control officer, a combat control operator and a surveillance operator, which tells you the aircraft is meant to direct a fight as well as watch one. It sees Russian aircraft, cruise missiles and drones a long way out, and passes that picture to fighters and ground-based air defences.

That sentence describes the architecture Kyiv is building towards rather than a snapshot of today’s inventory. The F-16 and Mirage 2000 are established in Ukrainian service; the Gripen reference points to arrangements that have been discussed separately. What matters is the underlying idea, which is that the aircraft is the node the rest of the system hangs off.

A fighter with its own radar switched on is announcing its position. A fighter being fed target data by an AEW aircraft can stay quiet, get vectored into position and only radiate at the last moment. That is the difference between hunting and being hunted.

Suspected since March, confirmed in September

The timeline is a small case study in how modern conflicts leak. Sweden announced the transfer in May 2024 as part of what was then its largest military aid package. The Ukrainian government confirmed the aircraft had actually arrived in August 2025.

Then, on 20 March 2026, footage appeared on a Russian Telegram channel apparently showing the aircraft in level flight, with Ukrainian voices audible in the background. The date and location could not be independently verified at the time, but it was a strong indication the aircraft was already working.

Nearly six months later the ministry has said so directly, as part of a broader release detailing Ukraine’s expanding fleet of Western combat aircraft.

The obvious problem

An AEW aircraft is a large, slow, radar-emitting target orbiting at medium altitude, and everybody within several hundred kilometres knows it is there the moment it switches on. Russia operates long-range air-to-air missiles specifically intended for this class of aircraft.

Which is why Ukraine has said very little about how it is being used, and why the confirmation came six months after the fact rather than on the day. The aircraft is valuable precisely to the degree that it survives, and a small fleet has no depth to absorb a loss.
