Netherlands Signs for One Saab GlobalEye, Shared With Sweden

The Netherlands is buying one aeroplane. That sounds like a rounding error in a defence budget, and it is arguably the most interesting procurement decision in European air power this month.

On 10 September 2026, the Dutch Ministry of Defence and Saab announced that the Netherlands had signed a Letter of Intent with Sweden for the acquisition of a single Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft. No contract has been signed. Saab was careful to say, in writing, that it has not received an order.

What makes it interesting is what happens to that one aircraft after it is delivered. It does not become a Dutch asset sitting on a Dutch ramp. It goes into a shared pool with three Swedish GlobalEyes, and crews from both countries fly whichever airframe happens to be available.

One jet, four jets, or eleven countries

Airborne early warning is the least affordable capability in modern air power on a per-country basis. A single radar aircraft is not a capability; it is a demonstration. To keep one orbit airborne continuously you need something like three or four airframes, plus crews, plus spares, plus a training pipeline. Almost no European country can justify that alone, which is why NATO has spent forty years running a shared E-3 fleet out of Geilenkirchen.

The Dutch answer is to buy the smallest possible stake in someone else's fleet. One Dutch aircraft joins three Swedish ones, and the Netherlands gets access to a four-aircraft pool for the price of a quarter of it. Sweden, in turn, gets a partner sharing the cost of sustainment on a fleet it was going to run anyway.

This is not an improvised arrangement. In July 2026, at the NATO summit in Ankara, eleven allies including the Netherlands and Sweden agreed to procure GlobalEye jointly as the alliance's replacement for the E-3 Sentry. The Dutch Letter of Intent is one country working out its own contribution to that decision.

What Saab actually said

Saab's public statement was noticeably careful, and worth reading closely because of what it withholds.

Defence manufacturers do not usually volunteer that they have not been paid. Saab did, twice, in two sentences. The company's chief executive was rather warmer about the substance.

Why a business jet, and why it matters

GlobalEye is built on a Bombardier Global 6500, a long-range business jet, rather than on an airliner. That choice defines the whole system. A business-jet airframe burns far less fuel per hour than a converted 707 or 737, climbs higher, and can stay on station for a very long time with a small crew. The trade is interior volume: there is no room for a large team of console operators, so the aircraft leans on automation and on datalinks to consoles that are somewhere else.

The sensor fit is not one radar but several. The Erieye ER array in the dorsal fairing does the air picture; a separate maritime radar looks down at the sea; passive sensors listen for emitters. Saab markets it as a multi-domain system rather than a flying radar, and the operational appeal in 2026 is specific: it is built to find things that classic AWACS radars struggle with, including drones and low-flying cruise missiles.

For a country facing Russian drone incursions and the prospect of cruise missiles crossing the North Sea, that is the whole argument. The Dutch aircraft is also expected to work as an airborne command post and an intelligence-gathering platform, which is a lot of jobs for one airframe and precisely why sharing four of them makes more sense than owning one.

Delivery is expected in 2031, which is five years away and assumes a contract that does not yet exist. In defence procurement that is roughly normal. The direction, though, is unmistakable: Europe's next generation of radar aircraft is Swedish, it is small, and increasingly nobody owns a whole fleet of their own.
