At about half past three on Friday afternoon, a Russian drone came down on a grey neoclassical block at 33 Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, directly across the road from St Sophia Cathedral. The building is the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine, the SBU. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the drone was aimed at one particular window: the office of the man who currently runs the agency.
Nobody was killed. Oleksandr Poklad, the SBU’s acting head, was not in the room. But smoke poured from a third-floor window, an exterior wall and sections of ceiling were destroyed, windows blew out across the cathedral grounds opposite, and a bakery on the corner was wrecked. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko put the count at seven injured within the hour; by evening it had risen to twelve, nine of them hospitalised and two in a serious condition.
Russia has struck ministries and government buildings in Kyiv before. Aiming a one-way attack drone at the office of a named intelligence chief is something else, and Ukraine has treated it as such. Zelensky said the same evening that the country had already chosen the “geography” of its answer.

A drone aimed at one window
The air raid alert sounded over Kyiv shortly before three in the afternoon. Explosions followed around half past. The impact site was not an anonymous industrial target on the city’s edge but the middle of the historic centre, a few hundred metres from the golden domes of St Sophia.
Zelensky confirmed the strike himself on X within the hour, and was unusually specific about the target.
The SBU followed with a statement of its own, saying the strike had been aimed deliberately at Poklad’s office and that it had not achieved its goal. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the attack a major escalation. The Kremlin did not immediately comment, and Russia has not claimed the strike.

Who Oleksandr Poklad is
Poklad is not a household name outside Ukraine, and he is not, formally, the SBU’s chief. He is its acting head, appointed in the summer of 2026 after a reshuffle at the top of the service, and parliament has not confirmed him in the post permanently. He came up through counterintelligence, the part of the SBU that hunts Russian agents inside Ukraine, and he has spent the intervening months building his own chain of command.
The SBU is not only a counterintelligence service. It runs some of the most consequential Ukrainian operations of the war, including the long-range drone and sabotage campaigns that have reached Russian airbases and infrastructure far behind the front. If Russia wanted to make a point about who it holds responsible for those, the office of the man running the agency is a legible way to do it. The SBU’s own response promised more of exactly that work, including strikes against Russian assets and networks.
The ninth day in a row
Friday was the ninth consecutive day of Russian strikes on Kyiv. Across Ukraine that day the air force counted 121 Shahed-type drones launched, roughly half of them the jet-powered variants that have become the defining feature of this phase of the air war, with 103 shot down or suppressed. An interception rate of around 85 per cent still leaves eighteen aircraft getting through, and one of them was enough.
The jet-powered Geran is the reason those eighteen matter more than they used to. Swapping the Shahed’s propeller for a small turbojet lifted cruising speeds from around 180 km/h to somewhere near 500 to 600 km/h, which compresses warning time, complicates gun-based defences and pushes the aircraft up into altitude bands where mobile fire teams struggle. Ukraine has been racing to field cheap counters, among them the Alexa Spatium jet interceptor, precisely because the old answer of a pickup truck with a machine gun no longer works reliably.
The consequence is visible in the target list. Volodymyrska Street is not the outskirts. A drone that can reach the centre of a defended capital and hit a specific building is a different instrument from one that saturates a district and hopes.

What a mirror response would mean
Zelensky’s phrasing was careful. Adequate, noticeable and, where possible, mirroring. Ukraine has no shortage of precedent for the last part: the SBU and military intelligence have hit Russian airbases, refineries and command targets deep inside Russia throughout 2026. A literal mirror of Friday’s strike would mean a drone aimed at the office of a named Russian security official in Moscow, which would be a significant departure even by the standards of this war.
Zelensky also said the geography of the response had already been decided, and that the timing would depend on when it could achieve an effective result. That is the language of an operation already planned rather than one improvised in anger. Whether it looks like a mirror or something less literal, the SBU has been given a target and a mandate, and its acting chief now has a personal reason to use both.
