Long before the Predator, before the Reaper, before a single Hellfire was ever fired from an unmanned aircraft, a little jet-powered drone with a bug’s name was already flying spy missions over the most heavily defended airspace on Earth. It was called the Ryan Firebee, and today’s drone war is its direct descendant.
The Firebee started life doing something far more humble: getting shot at.

Born to be a target
Ryan Aeronautical built the Firebee from 1951 as a jet-powered gunnery target — a small, fast, agile drone for fighter pilots and anti-aircraft gunners to practice against. Being designed to survive near-misses made it tough, and its small fiberglass body barely showed up on radar. Those two accidents of design would soon make it something far more valuable.

The Lightning Bug goes to war
After a Soviet SA-2 missile shot down Gary Powers’ U-2 in 1960, the U.S. urgently needed a way to spy on defended territory without risking a pilot. Under the secret “Big Safari” program, engineers stretched the Firebee, added a camera and a dead-reckoning navigation system, and created a reconnaissance drone. First called Fire Fly, it was renamed “Lightning Bug” after a press leak.
The Lightning Bugs flew from a DC-130 Hercules mothership, which carried up to four under its wings and released them off the enemy coast. They photographed North Vietnamese SAM sites, MiG bases, the Son Tay POW camp, and the first close-ups of the MiG-21. In all, the drones flew 3,435 sorties over China and North Vietnam across 11 years.

The drone that baited a missile
The single most audacious mission came on 13 February 1966, when a specially equipped “sniffer” Lightning Bug was deliberately flown to provoke an SA-2 launch. In the seconds before the missile struck, the drone recorded the SA-2’s guidance and proximity-fuze signals and beamed them to a listening aircraft offshore. That single intelligence coup let U.S. engineers build the countermeasures that would defeat the SA-2 — a trade of one cheap drone for countless aircrew lives.
Recovery was its own feat of daring. The drone deployed a parachute, and a CH-3 “Jolly Green Giant” helicopter would swoop in and snag the canopy in mid-air. From 1966 to 1975, this Mid-Air Recovery System made 2,745 attempts and caught 2,655 drones — a 96.7 percent success rate.
The grandfather of the Predator
After Vietnam, the secrecy that had protected the program also doomed it: with budgets tight, unmanned reconnaissance quietly faded, and it took until the 1980s and 1990s for cheap computing and satellite links to make drones practical again. When they came back — as the Predator, the Reaper, the Global Hawk — they were doing exactly what the Lightning Bug had pioneered decades earlier.
The Firebee itself never fully retired. It still flies as a target drone, and even laid chaff corridors during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Not bad for a machine built to be shot at.
