Russian crews call the Tupolev Tu-160 the &ldquo;White Swan&rdquo; for its pale anti-flash paint and its improbably graceful lines. The rest of the world knows it by its NATO name: Blackjack. By any name, it is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft ever to fly.<\/p><p>Nothing else in service quite matches it. Where the Americans went for a smaller, lower-flying penetrator, Tupolev went big: a variable-sweep wing that spreads to nearly 56 metres for efficient cruise and folds back for a high-speed dash, wrapped around a fuselage the size of an airliner.<\/p><p>Four Kuznetsov NK-32 afterburning turbofans &mdash; among the most powerful engines ever bolted to a combat aircraft &mdash; push it past Mach 2. It first flew on 18 December 1981 and entered service in 1987. Its job is to loiter at range and launch: two internal rotary launchers hold long-range Kh-55 and Kh-101\/102 cruise missiles, nuclear or conventional, letting it strike from thousands of kilometres away without entering hostile airspace. Maximum payload runs to roughly 40 tonnes, and unrefuelled range to about 12,300 km.<\/p><p>That makes it a strategic standoff platform, closer in spirit to a flying missile magazine than to a stealthy penetrator. Western analysts often note that, for all the drama, it remains a 1980s design &mdash; superb at what it does, but not a survivable stealth bomber in the mould of the B-2 or B-21.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fvvYOdATPrw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Stranded, scrapped, and reborn<\/h2><p>When the Soviet Union collapsed, a chunk of the Tu-160 fleet ended up stranded in newly independent Ukraine, at Priluki. Most were eventually scrapped under a U.S.-funded program; a handful were handed to Russia around 2000, partly to settle a natural-gas debt. Four decades after its first flight, the White Swan remains the biggest, heaviest, fastest bomber anyone has ever put into service.
