But on the night of 19 February 1985, over the Pacific, one did — rolling onto its side and plunging nearly six miles toward the ocean with 274 people aboard. That any of them lived is down to a few desperate seconds of flying at the very end.

This is the story of China Airlines Flight 006, and the 30,000-foot dive that a 747 somehow survived.

Kurzinfo

Flug: China Airlines 006, Taipei to Los Angeles, 19 February 1985

Flugzeug: Boeing 747SP, over the Pacific at 41,000 ft

Auslösen: the No. 4 engine lost power; the crew fixated on it

Der Herbst: the 747 rolled and dived about 30,000 ft in roughly two and a half minutes, pulling up to 5G

Recovery: the captain regained control at 9,500 ft, in cloud

Ergebnis: badly bent airframe, 2 serious injuries - and a safe landing at San Francisco

One engine, one fixation

Flight 006 was cruising at 41,000 feet, roughly 300 miles from the California coast, when the outermost right engine — number four — lost power. On its own, an engine failure on a four-engine jet is manageable. But as the crew concentrated on trying to restart it, the autopilot quietly did something dangerous: it held the wings level using aileron and rudder, hiding the growing asymmetry — right up until it ran out of authority.

When the autopilot could compensate no longer, the 747 rolled hard to the right and dropped its nose. In seconds, one of the largest aircraft in the world was diving almost vertically into cloud.

A China Airlines Boeing 747SP, the shortened long-range variant that flew Flight 006. Passengers and crew were pinned by g-forces that peaked around 5G — enough to bend the airframe. In cloud, with the instruments spinning and the ground rushing up unseen, Captain Min-Yuan Ho had no outside horizon to fly by. The aircraft plunged roughly 30,000 feet in about two and a half minutes.

Only as the 747 broke out of the cloud base did the crew finally see the sky, orient themselves, and haul back. The pull-out was so violent it tore parts off the aircraft — but it worked. The captain leveled off at about 9,500 feet, a few thousand feet above the sea.

The 747SP’s stubby profile. Inspectors were stunned by what had held together: wings visibly bent, large sections of the horizontal stabilizers and elevators gone, landing-gear doors ripped away, hydraulic systems damaged. Twenty-four people were hurt, two seriously. Remarkably, the aircraft was repaired and flying again within two months.

<div style="background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px
