It taught the industry to treat the lee of big mountains as genuinely dangerous airspace in high winds, and it fed decades of research into forecasting and avoiding the turbulence you cannot see. The tragedy was compounded by cruel timing: only the day before, a Canadian Pacific DC-8 had crashed while landing at the same Tokyo airport.<\/p><p>Nothing can soften the loss of 124 lives to a sightseeing detour.
