By the analysts&rsquo; reckoning, munitions and interceptors are the single largest expense of the entire war &mdash; more than $26 billion by the American Enterprise Institute&rsquo;s June estimate. You can win every engagement and still lose the budget.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Air-defence analysts, from Afterburner&rsquo;s earlier reporting<\/strong> &mdash; on the cost-exchange problem<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The interceptor drawdown has been staggering. Afterburner reported the Pentagon&rsquo;s own &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/pentagon-feinberg-memo-weapons-production-iran-stockpiles-2026\/\">twenty-one days to rebuild the arsenal<\/a>&rdquo; memo, which tracked the Patriot stockpile falling from roughly 2,330 interceptors before the war to somewhere around 800. Analysts say five months of fighting consumed virtually all of the Army&rsquo;s long-range precision missiles and between 38 and 80 percent of its THAAD interceptors &mdash; a big enough hole that Washington signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/america-35-billion-thaad-interceptor-deal-2026\/\">$35 billion deal to quadruple THAAD production<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/08\/patriot-missile-launch.jpg\" alt=\"A Patriot air-defence battery firing\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">A Patriot battery firing. Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What Iran destroyed, and the cost of staying<\/h2>\r\n<p>The ledger runs both ways. On the defensive side, Iran&rsquo;s missiles knocked out <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/iran-hit-americas-billion-dollar-eye-in-the-sky\/\">an AN\/FPS-132 early-warning radar<\/a> valued at around $2.1 billion, along with the AWACS and tankers caught on the ground. And simply keeping the force in theatre is expensive: a carrier strike group costs $6&ndash;8 million a day to operate, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/uss-abraham-lincoln-longest-continuous-deployment-record-2026\/\">USS Abraham Lincoln has now spent a record-breaking 200-plus days at sea<\/a>. Thirteen American service members have been killed and hundreds injured.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Adding it up<\/h2>\r\n<p>So what is the number? The most credible answer comes not from us but from budget analysts. In June, CSIS&rsquo;s Mark Cancian put the direct cost at $35.2&ndash;42.5 billion; the American Enterprise Institute pegged it at $38.6 billion. With fighting continuing into August, the real figure is now higher.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;By June the war had already cost the United States somewhere between 35 and 43 billion dollars, and munitions were the single biggest driver.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Mark F. Cancian<\/strong> &mdash; senior adviser, CSIS (as reported)<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Two honest caveats. First, these are estimates that fold together different things &mdash; weapons fired, weapons that must be bought to replace them, aircraft lost, and day-to-day operations &mdash; and reasonable people put the pieces together differently. Second, some of the biggest line items, like the $35 billion THAAD contract, are multi-year replacement bills, not cash already spent. What is not in doubt is the direction of travel. Every category &mdash; drones, jets, interceptors, cruise missiles, carrier days at sea &mdash; is pointing the same way: up.
