It was Royce Williams' second flight of the day, 18 November 1952, and his Grumman Panther was clawing past 12,000 feet when the radio crackled: bogeys, inbound from the north. He looked up. Seven contrails were unspooling across the high blue, arrowing straight for him.<\/p>\r\n<p>They were MiG-15s, faster, higher-climbing and harder-turning than anything the young lieutenant was flying. Within minutes, two of his three companions would peel away with mechanical trouble, and his remaining wingman's guns would jam. He earned his Navy wings at Pensacola in August 1945, cut his teeth on Hellcats and Corsairs and Bearcats, and by the time the Korean War pulled him back to sea he had been a fighter pilot for the better part of a decade.<\/p>\r\n<p>By November 1952 he was a lieutenant with Fighter Squadron 781, flying combat air patrol off the carrier USS Oriskany as part of Task Force 77. He would fly 70 missions in that war. Only one of them would follow him for the rest of his life, and he was not allowed to talk about it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SImG_7g-Lvg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin-top:-8px\">Royce Williams tells the story in his own words (American Veterans Center).<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">One Panther against the odds<\/h2>\r\n<p>The aircraft strapped to Williams that day was a Grumman F9F-5 Panther: one jet engine, one seat, one man. It was a sturdy, honest fighter built mostly for hitting ground targets, and against the swept-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/de\/flugzeug\/mig-15-fagot\/\">MiG-15<\/a> it was outmatched in speed, climb and firepower. The MiGs even carried more ammunition. On paper, this was not a fair fight, and everyone in the cockpit knew it.<\/p>\r\n<p>The target for the strike group was Hoeryong in the far northeast, tucked up near the corner where China, North Korea and the Soviet Union met. Williams' four-plane division climbed out through the weather to cover the fleet. Then his flight leader's fuel-pump warning light lit, and he turned for home with his wingman escorting. Seven MiGs, and now just two Panthers. Moments later, when the shooting started, Williams was effectively on his own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H_B09DEA2kU\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin-top:-8px\">The Grumman F9F Panther, the Navy's Korean War carrier jet.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Thirty-five minutes, alone<\/h2>\r\n<p>The MiGs split and dove. Williams hauled his Panther around into the diving formation and fired a short burst at the trailing jet, and watched it fall away. That was one. As the Soviets clawed back for altitude to set up another pass, he slid onto a second and sent it down too. Because the Panther carried so little ammunition, every trigger pull had to count.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then it became a knife fight at 30,000 feet: the remaining MiGs taking turns to climb and dive on him, Williams twisting his jet to the ragged edge of its limits, snapping off bursts as an enemy flashed across his sights. He fired a long burst as one Soviet fighter crossed belly-to-belly in front of him, and it went into the sea.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;In the moment I was a fighter pilot doing my job. A 37mm cannon shell tore through and killed his hydraulics; his controls went slack and heavy. Out of ammunition, nursing a machine that could barely fly, Williams pointed the Panther back toward the Oriskany, where the task force, mistaking him for the enemy, briefly opened fire on him too.<\/p>\r\n<p>He could not slow the crippled jet below 170 knots; a Panther is supposed to land at about 105. Somehow he put it down on the deck anyway. When the crew counted, there were 263 holes in the airframe. Williams did not have a scratch. Williams' flight had been warned about the incoming jets thanks to a small National Security Agency detachment, the agency was barely a year old, riding another ship in the task force. And the men he had just fought were not North Korean volunteers. They were the Soviet Air Force. The Soviet Union was not officially a combatant in Korea, and Washington was terrified that word of a straight-up shootout could drag Moscow all the way into the war.<\/p>\r\n<p>So Adm. Robert Briscoe told Williams, in effect, that this never happened. He was debriefed by admirals, by the Secretary of Defense, and a few weeks later by the newly inaugurated President Eisenhower, then sworn to silence. The official record credited him with a single kill and one damaged, and handed him a Silver Star. Through 110 more combat missions in Vietnam, through a full career and retirement as a captain, Williams told no one: not his fellow pilots, not his brother the aviator, not even his wife. The truth only began to surface after the Soviet Union collapsed and Moscow's own archives confirmed the battle; a 2014 Russian history by Igor Seidov named the Soviet pilots and recorded that only one of four MiGs made it home. The American records were not declassified until 2002.<\/p>\r\n<p>Recognition, when it finally came, came in a rush. In December 2022 the Navy upgraded his Silver Star to the Navy Cross, its second-highest honor. Then, on 24 February 2026, at the age of 100, Royce Williams received the Medal of Honor, becoming the last living Korean War recipient of the nation's highest award.
