In a fresh accounting delivered to Congress and confirmed by the programme office, the cost of buying America's stealth fighter fleet has climbed by roughly $51 billion since late 2023 — a jump of about ten percent, and one of the largest single revisions in the programme's thirty-year life.

That takes the acquisition bill from around $485 billion to roughly $536 billion. And acquisition is only the part where you buy the aeroplanes. It is not the part where you fly them for the next sixty years.

Nobody is cancelling anything. The F-35 Lightning II is now too deeply woven into nineteen air forces for that. But the revision lands at an awkward moment, with the US Air Force simultaneously trying to fund the F-47, the Navy circling its F/A-XX decision, and both services buying autonomous wingmen nobody has costed properly yet.

Kurzinfo

The revision: Acquisition cost up roughly $51 billion, about 10%, since late 2023

New total: Approximately $536 billion, up from about $485 billion

What drove it: Aircraft, engines, software upgrades, spare parts and fleet readiness

Programme of record: 2,456 production aircraft for the US Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy, through 2049

Lifetime estimate: About $2.1 trillion across a 94-year life cycle, 1994 to 2088

Full-rate production: Approved 12 March 2024, 23 years after development began

Programme office: F-35 Joint Program Office, Arlington, Virginia; over 2,200 staff worldwide

Where the $51 billion actually went

This is not a story about the jets suddenly costing more per copy. Unit prices have broadly held. The growth sits in the parts of the programme that are harder to photograph: engine work, spare parts, sustainment infrastructure, and above all software.

The centre of gravity is Block 4 — the modernisation package that turns the F-35 into the aircraft it was always advertised as, and its enabling hardware upgrade, Technology Refresh 3. TR-3 was originally due in April 2023. It arrived years late, and in September 2025 government auditors reported that Block 4 had been pushed out to 2031 with roughly $6 billion of growth attached.

Add readiness. The fleet's fully mission-capable rate has hovered near a quarter of the force, and closing that gap means buying spares, standing up depots and paying people — all of which lands in the same ledger.

A Belgian Air Component F-35A at Luke Air Force Base. That figure is real, but it measures something entirely different. It is the all-in estimate for developing, building and operating the fleet across a 94-year life cycle running from 1994 to 2088 — fuel, depot repairs, software maintenance, military and civilian salaries, the lot.

It also includes inflation, projected more than half a century into the future. The programme office has been blunt that this is roughly half the total.

“This figure accounts for all costs associated with the development, production, and sustainment of the F-35 air system. Around $1 trillion of this total is influenced by inflationary effects over the years.”
Gemeinsames Programmbüro F-35 — from its published cost clarification, April 2025

In other words, when someone calls the F-35 a two-trillion-dollar fighter, about a trillion of that is a guess about the value of money in 2080. The $51 billion announced this week is the opposite kind of number: near-term, concrete, and already being spent.

Why it matters now

The F-35 no longer competes only against sceptical accountants. It competes against the next generation. The Air Force wants 185 F-47s. The Navy is still deciding F/A-XX. Both services want Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Every dollar the F-35 absorbs is a dollar those programmes do not get.

Meanwhile the aircraft keeps selling. Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, Japan and more have signed up, and the queue has not shortened because a spreadsheet moved. Air forces are buying a network and a sensor suite, and there is nothing else on the Western market that offers the package.

Which is the real point. The F-35 is expensive because it is enormous — the largest single air-system procurement in the history of the Pentagon, run concurrently across development, production and sustainment for four decades. Programmes of that shape do not produce small numbers. They produce numbers like this one, at regular intervals, for decades.

PilotPhotog breaks down how the F-35's headline cost figures are actually assembled — useful context for why the totals move so much.

Sources: Bloomberg; U.S. Government Accountability Office; Congressional Research Service report R48304; F-35 Joint Program Office cost clarification; Air & Space Forces Magazine; Defense News.

Ähnliche Beiträge

F-35 Block 4: The Upgrade Bogged Down in Delays

Amerikas Luftfahrtlobby fordert 60 F-35 pro Jahr

Die B-21 und die F-47 liegen Berichten zufolge vor dem Zeitplan.

The cost of buying America’s stealth fighter fleet has risen about 10% since late 2023 — roughly $51 billion — driven by engines, spares, readiness and the long-delayed Block 4 software.

[664,670

post-17398107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-military-aviation","category-news

F-35 Costs Jump $51 Billion: What It Means | MiGFlug

<meta name="description" content="The F-35 program cost rose about $51 billion since late 2023, taking acquisition to roughly $536 billion.
