Yet in a hangar at Ok\u0119cie sat the aircraft that was supposed to change all that: the PZL.50 Jastrz\u0105b &mdash; the Hawk &mdash; a sleek, modern, all-metal monoplane that never got the chance to fight.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its story is one of the great what-ifs of the Second World War: a promising fighter strangled by the one thing its designers could not conjure &mdash; a powerful enough engine &mdash; and finished off by a cruel irony on the war&rsquo;s opening days.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px;border-radius:8px;margin:24px 0\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:18px\">Kurzinfo<\/p><ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:20px;line-height:1.8\"><li><strong>Designer:<\/strong> Wsiewo\u0142od Jakimiuk, head of PZL&rsquo;s fighter team<\/li><li><strong>Rolle:<\/strong> single-engine monoplane fighter to replace the PZL P.11<\/li><li><strong>Engine (prototype):<\/strong> 840 hp Bristol Mercury VIII &mdash; badly underpowered for the airframe<\/li><li><strong>Erster Flug:<\/strong> February 1939<\/li><li><strong>Ordered:<\/strong> 300 aircraft in 1938; production cancelled spring 1939, with 30 left under construction<\/li><li><strong>Schicksal:<\/strong> the sole flying prototype was shot down in September 1939 &mdash; by Polish anti-aircraft gunners<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A hawk for a modernising air force<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the mid-1930s the Poles knew their famous gull-winged PZL P.11 &mdash; a world-beater when it appeared &mdash; was sliding into obsolescence. Wsiewo\u0142od Jakimiuk, who led PZL&rsquo;s fighter team, drew up a sturdy low-wing monoplane, all metal, deliberately roomy enough to accept far more powerful engines as they became available. It was named Jastrz\u0105b, the Hawk.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan was sound. The execution was cursed. Rickard<\/strong> &mdash; aviation historian, historyofwar.org<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Underpowered and out of time<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence ran so high that in 1938 the Polish Aviation Command ordered 300 Jastrz\u0105b As before the prototype had even been finished, paying for the first hundred in advance. Then the delays began. A British-supplied undercarriage arrived four months late, pushing the maiden flight back to February 1939 &mdash; and when the Hawk finally flew, it disappointed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vy7pXtb-QBE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The little Mercury could push the big fighter to only 274 mph, a full 35 mph below expectations, and the aircraft was twitchy in slow turns and suffered tail flutter at speed. Some of that was fixable &mdash; a redesigned carburettor intake, built for the wrong engine, was throttling the Mercury; enlarge it and the modified prototype hit its promised 310 mph by August 1939. Then the Germans invaded. PZL&rsquo;s test pilot, Jerzy Widawski, tried to fly the one airworthy prototype east to Lw\u00f3w to save it &mdash; and was shot down by a Polish anti-aircraft gun whose crew took the unfamiliar shape for a German aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img data-opt-id=1408480677  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ml5psubhxdln.i.optimole.com\/cb:lwS0.cfdc\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/08\/pzl-p11c-gull-wing.jpg\" alt=\"PZL P.11c gull-wing fighter\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">Poland&rsquo;s pilots fought the 1939 campaign in aircraft like this P.11c &mdash; brave crews in obsolete machines, while their modern replacement never reached them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland&rsquo;s airmen went to war outnumbered and outdated, and yet fought with a ferocity that stunned the Luftwaffe.
