The exhaust was ducted out through the side of the aircraft. When the glider stopped moving, the driver pulled a lanyard to release the shackles and drove forward, and the act of driving forward pulled the line that swung the nose open.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>If the nose did not open, the plan was to drive through it. Everybody involved, including General Aircraft, concluded this was a bad idea.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What they built instead was a box with wings on top. Putting the cockpit and the wing above the fuselage left the whole cross-section clear for cargo, and the entire nose hinged sideways to open it. Four flew in the night lift carrying 17-pounder anti-tank guns, of which only two reached the landing zone. Thirty more came in the evening reinforcement lift, twenty of them carrying Tetrarch light tanks of the 6th Airborne Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It did not all go well. One broke its tow rope and landed back in England. One was released early and later attacked, killing four men. One came down in the Channel after its Tetrarch tore loose from its shackles and went out through the nose. Two collided on the landing zone and destroyed both tanks, and a third flipped its Tetrarch while unloading.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bill Gladden, who was 20, flew in on top of one of the tanks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;We were told anyone not in their seat when the tow rope was dropped had to freeze in place to avoid spoiling the balance of the glider. This time we towed a Hamilcar glider - much larger than the Horsa and capable of carrying a small tank with its crew.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Flt Sgt Walter Russell Wright<\/strong> &mdash; Navigator, No. 298 Squadron RAF, on the evening lift of 6 June 1944<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Not one Hamilcar came back from Normandy. They were far too large to recover.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Arnhem and the Rhine<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>At Arnhem in September 1944 the type had its worst day. Two turned over onto their backs on soft ground on 17 September, killing three glider pilots. Others ditched, aborted or were hit by flak, and the third lift &mdash; American engineers with bulldozers &mdash; was cancelled.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Operation Varsity, the Rhine crossing on 24 March 1945, was the largest Hamilcar effort: 48 of them, carrying 17-pounders, Universal Carriers, eight M22 Locust tanks and a pair of D4 bulldozers. Seven were lost on the way, mostly to tug engine failures, and one carrying a Locust broke up in the air over the Rhine with all aboard. Three more were shot down by flak. Thirty-eight landed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Afterwards<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>A powered version was developed for the Pacific, with two Bristol Mercury radials to give it range and let it fly home again. It flew in February 1945 and was overtaken by the end of the war.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Of the 344 built, no complete airframe survives.
