It is now 4 September 2026, nothing has arrived, and the workaround that was supposed to rescue the timetable has just fallen apart. Armasuisse has confirmed that the arrangement under which Germany would have helped bridge the gap is dead, and that the bill for Switzerland&rsquo;s ground-based air defence is heading somewhere between roughly three and five times what Bern originally hoped to pay.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mechanics are simple and slightly brutal. Switzerland bought five Patriot fire units for about two billion Swiss francs. Then Russia invaded Ukraine, Germany handed a slice of its own Patriot inventory to Kyiv, and in 2025 Washington decided that the systems coming off the line would go to Germany first. Switzerland, a non-NATO buyer with no war on its border, went to the back of the queue.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea was that Bern and Berlin would find a way to swap places later, or that Germany would pass hardware back once its own replacements arrived. In the best case that nearly doubles the programme. In the worst case it roughly triples it. Had the German arrangement worked, armasuisse reckoned the extra bill would have been closer to one billion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two things drive the increase. The first is time: pushing production years to the right means inflation eats the budget from the inside, and defence inflation since 2022 has been considerably nastier than the consumer figure. The second is that the Patriot itself is not standing still. The system Switzerland eventually receives will be a further-developed one, with the radar and interceptor improvements that Ukraine&rsquo;s war has forced onto the roadmap. The first of five fire units is now expected in 2032 at the earliest, against an original date of 2026. The federal government also wants an additional long-range ground-based air defence system, with roughly five billion francs earmarked for it. That programme has not been decided, and it now sits behind a Patriot line item that has just grown by up to 4.3 billion. Swiss defence procurement has a long history of political indigestion when the numbers move like this, and these numbers have moved a lot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a quiet lesson here about buying American hardware as a neutral. When the queue gets long, allocation is a political decision made in Washington, and non-NATO customers do not win those arguments.
