There is no SuperTandem. That is not marketing spin; it is accurate. The organisation runs on Patreon subscriptions, merchandise, crowdfunded flights and selling advertising space on photographs taken from balloons. One flight was funded by thirteen customer adverts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Their genuinely impressive achievement is PongSat: student experiments flown inside ping-pong balls, carried to the edge of space free of charge. The first flew on 9 March 2002 with fourteen experiments from a Sacramento high-school maths class. JP Aerospace says it has since flown over 18,000 PongSats involving more than 80,000 students. That is a real contribution to aerospace education and it deserves more attention than the concept art does.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Their headline technical claim is the Tandem airship flight of 22 October 2011 over Nevada&rsquo;s Black Rock Desert: two balloon envelopes separated by a thirty-foot carbon-fibre truss, two electric motors turning six-foot propellers, eighty pounds all-up including twenty pounds of balloon, recovered under five parachutes from 95,085 feet. It was the organisation&rsquo;s 126th mission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two honest caveats. The altitude is a claim announced by press release, and contemporary aviation press covered it as such &mdash; Aero-News Network&rsquo;s headline at the time began &ldquo;If Confirmed&rdquo;. And JP Aerospace has never conducted a crewed high-altitude flight of any kind.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The higher you start from, the smaller your rocket needs to be. Think of Virgin Galactic&rsquo;s Spaceship Two, or the Pegasus orbital launch vehicle. They both get a huge advantage by launching from an aircraft. Powell has also been refreshingly clear about the odds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The number one question is: Can a little group like JP Aerospace tackle such a huge and complex project? Answer: I have no idea, but so far so good.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>John Powell<\/strong> &mdash; President and founder, JP Aerospace, same interview<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Dropping Things From Other Things: A Short History<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The concept Hazel illustrates is older than most people assume, and it has a real record.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 1 March 1949, aboard the USS Norton Sound, a group including James Van Allen worked out the rockoon: a sounding rocket carried up by a balloon and fired from altitude, so it does not have to punch through the thick lower atmosphere. The first attempt failed in the Arctic in August 1952. The first success came a year later in the Atlantic. The problem with air launch has always been where the pieces come down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Then it got serious. On 13 October 1959 a Bold Orion missile released from a B-47 at 35,000 feet passed within about four miles of the Explorer VI satellite &mdash; the first interception of a satellite in history. From 1959 the X-15 was dropped from a B-52 199 times, and on 3 October 1967 Pete Knight took the X-15A-2 to Mach 6.7, a crewed-aircraft record that still stands.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>And on 5 April 1990, Pegasus flew from NASA&rsquo;s NB-52B with no prior test flights and became the world&rsquo;s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Its wings and fins were designed by Burt Rutan&rsquo;s Scaled Composites. From 1994 it flew from an L-1011 called Stargazer, released at around 40,000 feet with five seconds of free fall before ignition. Photo: NASA \/ Lori Losey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">And a Short History of Not Making It Work<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The graveyard is bigger than the trophy cabinet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Zero 2 Infinity flight-tested its balloon-launched Bloostar off Spain in March 2017 and has not reached orbit. Leo Aerospace, developing a reusable rockoon called Regulus, shut down in March 2020; its chief executive said plainly that funding was the major component.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Virgin Orbit is the cautionary tale. LauncherOne failed on its first attempt in May 2020, reached orbit in January 2021 with ten CubeSats released from the port wing of a 747 at 33,000 feet, then failed again in January 2023 and took nine satellites with it. The company filed for Chapter 11 in April 2023. Stratolaunch bought the 747 for $17 million.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Which brings us to the one outfit actually doing what Hazel depicts. Stratolaunch&rsquo;s Roc &mdash; 385 feet of wingspan, the largest ever flown, beating the Spruce Goose &mdash; carries the Talon-A hypersonic vehicle. Talon-A went supersonic in March 2024, exceeded Mach 5 in December 2024, and in March 2025 flew hypersonically and landed on a runway. In July 2026 Stratolaunch announced more than ten successful hypersonic flights with a reusable, fully autonomous air-launched aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is the first sustained reusable hypersonic flight test programme in the United States since the X-15 finished in 1968. A well-lit animation of a wing separating from an airship is indistinguishable, at a glance, from footage of a Talon-A dropping off Roc. One of those things has flown ten times. The other has never existed outside a computer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>JP Aerospace has been open about that for twenty-five years, which is more than can be said for some better-funded operations. They fly ping-pong balls full of schoolchildren&rsquo;s experiments to 90,000 feet and they are honest that the orbital airship is a maybe.
