They are sold on what fits through the hole in the side, and on what it costs to carry it.

The A350F’s main deck cargo door is cut from a 4.5-metre aperture and gives a clear opening 4.3 metres wide. Airbus says that makes it the largest main-deck door in commercial aviation, about 15 percent wider than those on competing large widebody freighters. It is a seven-frame-bay structure occupying roughly a quarter of the rear fuselage, built in carbon fibre at Illescas in Spain, and it is a working structural component rather than a hatch: it has to absorb flight torsion across temperatures from minus 45 to plus 55 Celsius.

The mechanism is fully electric rather than hydraulic. The door opens or closes in about a minute and is certified to operate safely in winds up to 40 knots.

“This scale allows for the seamless, one-go entry of ultra-large items such as turbofan engines. The A350F is aimed squarely at this segment, with Boeing answering through the 777-8F. Photo: Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 2.0

The regulatory clock is the sales pitch

The commercially decisive claim Airbus makes has nothing to do with the door. It is that the A350F is the only freighter fully meeting ICAO’s 2027 carbon dioxide emissions standard.

Cargo fleets are long-lived and capital-intensive. An operator ordering today expects to still be flying the airframe in the 2040s, so an aircraft that complies with the standard from the outset is a materially different proposition to one that needs an accommodation. Airbus builds the A350F from over 70 percent advanced materials, which it says leaves the aircraft around 35 tonnes lighter empty than other large widebody freighters, and claims up to a 40 percent reduction in fuel burn and emissions against cargo aircraft currently in service. It will be cleared for up to 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel at entry into service.

Boeing’s answer in the same class is the 777-8F.

Airbus’s own introduction to the A350F and the case it is making to cargo operators.

Who is actually buying it

The largest customer so far is Atlas Air, which committed to 20 firm aircraft in a deal valued at around $7 billion, with deliveries running from 2029. Air China Cargo increased its order to 10 aircraft in May. Etihad has ordered seven. And now eight more have been firmed for a customer nobody has named.

The wider Airbus picture is less tidy. The same monthly release showed 57 aircraft delivered in August and 475 for the year to date, up around nine percent on the same point last year, but still well short of the pace needed to reach the roughly 870 deliveries Airbus is targeting for 2026.

Against that, the A350F schedule has very little slack. Flight-test campaigns for a new widebody typically run twelve to fifteen months. A first flight in late September puts a late-2027 delivery within reach, and not much more than that. Somebody signed for eight of them anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
When will the Airbus A350F make its first flight?

Airbus is targeting the third week of September 2026, with 24 September the date most commonly cited, flying from Toulouse-Blagnac.
