On Monday he did, in capital letters, on his own social network, and by Tuesday afternoon Bombardier\u2019s share price had taken a seven per cent hit and a Republican senator from Kansas was publicly asking the White House to think again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The post was short. &ldquo;NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!&rdquo; the President wrote on Truth Social. &ldquo;If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a &lsquo;piggyback.&rsquo; BUY AMERICAN.&rdquo; It was reshared by Pete Hoekstra, the US Ambassador to Canada.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What makes this more than another line in an escalating trade war is what the US military currently has on order from the Canadian planemaker. Under the High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System programme, known as HADES, it is replacing a fleet of ageing turboprop spy planes with business jets that fly higher, further and faster. The chosen airframe is the Bombardier Global 6500. The designation is ME-11B.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>This is not a paper plan the Army could quietly walk away from. It has already divested all of its older turboprop ISR aircraft, and in the interim it has been leaning on contractor-operated jets &mdash; also Bombardier-based &mdash; to keep the mission going. Photo: US Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Air Force has its own Bombardier fleet: the E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node, a Global Express carrying a relay payload that turns it into a flying switchboard for aircraft and ground units that cannot otherwise talk to each other. That fleet matters less to this argument than it used to, because the Air Force wants to retire it in fiscal 2028 and push the job into space. Senators have already said they are unhappy about that, so it may yet survive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>One important caveat: military and civilian certification in the United States are separate processes, and the administration could simply exempt military aircraft from whatever it does. After Trump\u2019s January 2026 threat to &ldquo;decertify&rdquo; Bombardier aircraft, the White House told several outlets that in-service aircraft would be exempt. It did not say whether future military purchases would be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">This started with Gulfstream<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Underneath the capital letters is a genuine regulatory grievance. Trump has repeatedly accused Canada of dragging its feet on certifying business jets from Gulfstream, Bombardier\u2019s main rival in the large and super-midsize cabin classes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Transport Canada did certify five specific Gulfstream business jets in March 2026, but broader type certification has not followed. The sticking point, at least on the G700 and G800, has been a Canadian demand for more fuel system icing testing. Kansas, as he put it, is the Air Capital of the World.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bombardier\u2019s own response, given to NBC News, made the same point at national scale: American workers at sites in Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Delaware, California, Washington DC and New Jersey, with a direct employment presence in more than 20 states, and a new facility due to open in Fort Wayne, Indiana later this year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What Bombardier does not do is build a complete aircraft in the United States. During Trump\u2019s first term, a trade fight between Bombardier and Boeing pulled in the US government and ended up derailing a proposed Canadian order for F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornets. Canada eventually bought F-35s instead, years later and after a full competition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>How a sales ban would actually work is nobody\u2019s idea of clear. There may be no legal mechanism for an outright prohibition at all. Washington could instead try decertification, punitive tariffs, or some other economic lever &mdash; each of which invites Canadian retaliation and probably litigation. The threat landed the same week Canada\u2019s own retaliatory tariff package took effect, after trade talks collapsed in August.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For now it is a post, not a policy.
