At 17:24 on Thursday afternoon, easyJet flight U23905 pushed back from Terminal 2 at Milan Malpensa, bound for Prague with 146 passengers aboard. Seven minutes later, on a taxiway a few hundred metres from the airport fire station, the Airbus A320 stopped dead.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A passenger&rsquo;s power bank was producing smoke. The captain declared a mayday at 17:31, the crew ordered an immediate evacuation, and everyone left the aircraft down the inflatable slides. Two people were slightly hurt on the way down. Malpensa closed. Twenty-one inbound flights were sent away to Linate, Bergamo, Basel, Lyon, Paris, Rome, Turin and Zurich. The airport was not back at full capacity until half past seven.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>None of that is the genuinely interesting part. U23905 to Prague is an ordinary evening rotation on a 186-seat A320. On Thursday it got as far as the taxiway.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What saved the afternoon was geography. The aircraft happened to come to a stop within sight of one of the three fire stations Malpensa keeps distributed around its runways and terminals, so the airport&rsquo;s Dragon appliances &mdash; six- and eight-wheel-drive monsters carrying more than 12,000 litres of water apiece &mdash; were alongside almost immediately. The cabin materials did the rest: seat foams and fabrics on a modern airliner are certified to resist ignition, which buys a crew the minutes they need.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those minutes were used properly. Crew and detectors flagged the smoke, the flight deck declared an emergency, and the decision to evacuate was taken while the jet was still on the ground with its engines running. The reporting does not agree<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Here is a detail worth dwelling on, because it decides how frightening the event actually was. ANSA, reporting on Thursday evening, said the power bank belonged to a passenger and was inside a wheeled cabin bag stowed in an overhead locker. VareseNews, reporting from Malpensa on Friday and publishing photographs of the affected seat, said the battery had been put in a seat pocket and generated enough heat to melt the material around it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those are not compatible accounts, and at the time of writing neither has been confirmed by an investigation. Most other outlets, including Euronews and aeroTELEGRAPH, say only that the device was in hand baggage. easyJet has not been quoted issuing a public statement of its own in the Italian or specialist coverage reviewed here.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The distinction matters more than it looks. A battery failing at a seat is noticed in seconds, by the passenger sitting on top of it. A battery failing inside a closed bin, inside a closed bag, is noticed when smoke reaches the aisle &mdash; which can be several minutes later, and several minutes is the whole ballgame with a lithium cell. It is precisely this asymmetry that has driven the rule changes of the past two years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:340px;margin:24px auto\"><div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:177.78%;height:0;overflow:hidden\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_mCX-C2n9Bg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin-top:-10px\">La Stampa&rsquo;s footage of the evacuation at Malpensa: slides deployed, passengers walking away across the taxiway.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">How often this actually happens<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Vague talk of a &ldquo;rising trend&rdquo; is not much use to anybody, so here are real numbers with dates attached. The US Federal Aviation Administration maintains a public list of lithium-battery events involving smoke, fire or extreme heat aboard passenger and cargo aircraft. That list recorded 93 verified events in 2025 &mdash; roughly one every four days, or close to two a week &mdash; of which 80 were on passenger aircraft and 13 on freighters. Through 30 June 2026 the FAA had verified 38 more. The chart was last updated on 11 August 2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two caveats, both the FAA&rsquo;s own. The list covers American operations only, so it is a sample of world traffic rather than a census. And the agency states plainly that these are the events it is aware of and should not be treated as a complete listing. The real global figure is higher, and nobody publishes it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The exposure is easy enough to picture. An IATA passenger survey found that 83 per cent of travellers fly with a mobile phone, 60 per cent with a laptop and 44 per cent with a power bank. EASA reckons the average passenger now boards with four or five lithium-powered items. Multiply that by the billions of journeys flown every year and the surprise is not that batteries occasionally fail in cabins; it is that they do not do so far more often.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Lithium-powered devices are safe when handled properly, but they can pose a risk if damaged or packed incorrectly. As more travellers fly with these devices, our Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries campaign will help airlines educate their passengers on the simple rules they must keep in mind when travelling with the electronic devices that have become an essential part of their daily lives.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Nick Careen<\/strong> &mdash; Senior Vice President, Operations, Safety and Security, IATA, launching the Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries campaign, December 2025<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What cabin crew are actually trained to do<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>A lithium fire is not an ordinary cabin fire, and the procedure is not the one most passengers imagine. In September 2025 the FAA issued Safety Alert for Operators 25002, which set out three demands on US carriers: reassess where passengers stow devices, retrain crews on how battery fires differ from every other kind, and tell passengers far more clearly what to do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The technical core of that alert is blunt. Halon extinguishers, the standard cabin bottle, will knock down visible flame but will not stop a cell in thermal runaway from continuing to heat itself. Only cooling works, and cooling means water &mdash; a lot of it, poured on and kept coming, because a pack that has stopped burning can reignite minutes later as the next cell in the chain lets go. Many airlines now carry fire-containment bags for exactly this: the device goes in, water goes in, and the bag holds smoke and flame until the aircraft is on the ground.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Notice what every step of that procedure assumes. It assumes the crew can reach the device. The A321 diverted to Shanghai Pudong; nobody was hurt.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The rules are being rewritten airline by airline<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The turning point was Gimhae, 28 January 2025. An Air Busan Airbus A321, registration HL7763, was preparing to depart for Hong Kong with 176 people aboard when fire broke out in a rear overhead bin. Everyone got out down the slides with three minor injuries. The aircraft burned out and was written off. South Korea&rsquo;s transport ministry announced in March 2025 that a faulty power bank was the likely cause.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/09\/air-busan-airbus-a321-power-bank-fire-rules.jpg\" alt=\"An Air Busan Airbus A321 pushing back\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">An Air Busan A321 of the same type as HL7763, destroyed by an overhead-bin fire at Gimhae in January 2025. From 1 March 2025, Korean carriers were required to keep power banks and e-cigarettes out of overhead bins altogether, on the passenger&rsquo;s person or in a seat pocket, with charging from in-seat USB sockets prohibited. Asian carriers followed through 2025: Singapore Airlines and Scoot, Thai Airways, AirAsia, then Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia barred in-flight use.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Gulf came next. Emirates banned the use of any power bank on board from 1 October 2025, limited passengers to one device under 100 Wh, forbade charging a power bank from the aircraft&rsquo;s supply, and required stowage in the seat pocket or under the seat rather than overhead. Europe caught up over the winter: SWISS prohibited power bank use from the start of 2026, the wider Lufthansa Group from January 2026. In the United States, United barred power banks from overhead bins from 1 March 2026 and American revised its policy from 1 May 2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>And easyJet? easyJet already had a rule. Its published dangerous goods list states, in as many words, that power banks are prohibited from use on its aircraft and must not be used to charge other devices, with a maximum of two spare batteries in carry-on baggage. That rule was in force on Thursday. It did not help, because a power bank that nobody is using can still fail &mdash; which is the uncomfortable lesson of Malpensa and the reason bans on <em>use<\/em> are only half a policy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What the regulators require, and what they merely suggest<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Underneath the airline patchwork sits a thinner layer of actual law, and it is worth being precise about where one ends and the other begins.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>EASA&rsquo;s intervention is Safety Information Bulletin 2025-03, published on 28 May 2025, which consolidated seven older bulletins into a single document. A Safety Information Bulletin is exactly what its name says: information. It asks operators to reinforce passenger communication and to train ground staff and cabin crew, and it lists the behaviours it would like passengers to adopt &mdash; carry power banks and e-cigarettes where they can be monitored, preferably on the person; charge devices only from the aircraft&rsquo;s own supply; travel with batteries at a lower state of charge. On the specific question of using a power bank in flight, the bulletin is candid that charging e-cigarettes is forbidden while using or charging power banks is &ldquo;not forbidden but strongly discouraged&rdquo;.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Smart phones and computers powered by lithium batteries are now an inherent part of our daily lives, and we know that each passenger now takes four to five such items with them on a flight. Airlines and their ground staff need to make sure passengers know how to travel with these items responsibly.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Jesper Rasmussen<\/strong> &mdash; Flight Standards Director, EASA, on the publication of Safety Information Bulletin 2025-03, 28 May 2025<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That gap &mdash; between a European agency that discourages and Korean or Emirati authorities and carriers that prohibit &mdash; is the whole story. There is no EU regulation banning the use of a power bank in an aircraft cabin. There is no FAA rule either. What exists instead is a collection of company policies of varying strictness, changing at different dates, published on twenty different websites.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>IATA is trying to knit it together. Its guidance to operators, dated 31 March 2026, recommends that from 1 January 2027 power banks should not be recharged on board, should not be used to charge other devices on board, and should be limited to two per passenger. That is a genuine step forward, and it is still guidance. Airlines adopt it or they do not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The rules that do bind you, stated exactly<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>These are the practical facts, and they are worth committing to memory because they are the same nearly everywhere and almost nobody knows them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Cabin only, never the hold.<\/strong> Spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks are forbidden in checked baggage, full stop. This is not an airline preference; it is written into the dangerous-goods rules that national regulators enforce. The reasoning is straightforward: a fire in the cabin has thirty pairs of eyes and a trained crew on it within seconds, while a fire in a cargo hold has a suppression system that was never designed for a self-oxidising chemical reaction. IATA&rsquo;s own survey found 45 per cent of passengers believe the opposite is true.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>100 watt-hours is the ordinary ceiling.<\/strong> Under the US rules that mirror the international standard, a lithium-ion spare battery or power bank is limited to 100 Wh. Below that line you need nobody&rsquo;s permission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>160 watt-hours is the hard stop.<\/strong> Between 101 and 160 Wh you may carry up to two spare batteries, and only with the airline&rsquo;s explicit approval &mdash; the bracket that covers professional camera rigs, large drones and cordless tools. Above 160 Wh a battery is simply not permitted on a passenger aircraft. That is why a lithium-powered portable generator, however convenient, can never be flown.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Doing the arithmetic.<\/strong> Watt-hours are volts multiplied by amp-hours. A power bank marked in milliamp-hours needs converting first: divide the mAh by 1,000, then multiply by the voltage. A typical 20,000 mAh pack at 3.7 V works out at 74 Wh and is comfortably legal. A 27,000 mAh pack at 3.7 V is right on the 100 Wh line, which is why that capacity sits at the top of what manufacturers sell to travellers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Protect the terminals.<\/strong> Spare batteries should travel in their original packaging or with the contacts taped, and should be stowed away from other batteries and from anything flammable. Short-circuiting a bare terminal against a set of keys is one of the commonest failure paths, and it is entirely preventable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A decade of slow-walking, and the bill arriving<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The industry has known about this since the Boeing 787 battery groundings of 2013 and since the cargo losses that preceded them. What has changed is the volume: every seat now carries a small arsenal of energy-dense cells, and the aviation system has responded with recommendations, campaigns and leaflets while leaving the binding rules broadly where they were in 2016.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Malpensa on Thursday was the system working. Fire-resistant materials, an alert crew, a decisive captain, an airport fire service two hundred metres away, and a bill of two bruises and one lost hour of capacity. Gimhae in January 2025 was the same failure a few minutes later in its life cycle, and it cost an aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The uncomfortable conclusion is that easyJet had already done the thing the industry keeps recommending. It had banned using power banks on board. The device still failed.
