On 11 September 2026 the Royal Australian Air Force declared initial operational capability for two long-range missiles on the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/aircraft\/fa-18-super-hornet\/\">F\/A-18F Super Hornet<\/a>: the AGM-158C LRASM against ships, and the AGM-158B JASSM-ER against targets on land.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Neither weapon is new. What is new is that an Australian crew can now be tasked with them, and that changes the geometry of any problem the RAAF might be handed in its own region.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A Super Hornet with LRASM does not have to fly towards a well-defended warship. It has to fly towards a release point several hundred kilometres away from one.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 24px;margin:26px 0;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF\">\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px;color:#222\">Kurzinfo<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin:4px 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.7\"><strong>What was declared:<\/strong> initial operational capability for LRASM and JASSM-ER on the RAAF&rsquo;s F\/A-18F Super Hornet fleet<br>\r\n<strong>Angek\u00fcndigt:<\/strong> 11 September 2026<br>\r\n<strong>AGM-158C LRASM:<\/strong> anti-ship, designed to engage high-value maritime targets at ranges beyond 370 km<br>\r\n<strong>AGM-158B JASSM-ER:<\/strong> land attack, able to identify and strike targets at up to 900 km<br>\r\n<strong>How it was proved:<\/strong> two LRASM firings at the Point Mugu Sea Range in the United States in February 2025, then two JASSM-ER launches at the Woomera Test Range in South Australia that November<br>\r\n<strong>Second platform:<\/strong> LRASM testing was extended to the P-8A Poseidon during Rim of the Pacific 26, where the aircraft launched a missile and hit its target<br>\r\n<strong>Who did it:<\/strong> the RAAF with the Defence Delivery Group and Joint Capabilities Group, working alongside United States military and industry partners<br>\r\n<strong>Policy framing:<\/strong> part of the long-range strike programme set out in Australia&rsquo;s National Defence Strategy, under the doctrine of deterrence by denial<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Two missiles, one family<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>LRASM and JASSM-ER share the AGM-158 designation because they share a lineage. Both are stealthy, subsonic, turbofan-powered cruise missiles with low-observable shaping, and both are designed to be released well outside the reach of the defences around the target.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The difference is in the seeker and the brain. JASSM-ER flies to coordinates and needs to know where the target is before launch. LRASM was built on the assumption that it will not be told precisely, and that the satellite navigation it would like to use may not be available.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>So LRASM carries its own sensors, works out which contact in a group of ships is the one worth hitting, and routes itself accordingly. That autonomy is the entire reason it exists, because a modern surface action group is a networked air-defence system, not a target.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;By acquiring a suite of long-range maritime and land strike missiles Air Force will increase the lethality of our air combat aircraft and avoid increasingly sophisticated air defences. We are continuing to develop and grow Air Force&rsquo;s ability to precisely strike targets at long-range.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Air Marshal Stephen Chappell<\/strong> &mdash; Chief of Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why the Poseidon matters more than the Super Hornet<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The headline is the fighter. The more interesting line is the one about the P-8A.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Australia&rsquo;s Super Hornet fleet is small and its combat radius is what it is. For a country responsible for an area of ocean as large as Australia&rsquo;s, that is the cheapest capability on the table.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Deterrence by denial, in plain English<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The phrase in Australia&rsquo;s National Defence Strategy is deterrence by denial. Stripped of the policy language it means: do not try to persuade an adversary that you will punish them afterwards, persuade them that the thing they want to do will not work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;This will allow Air Force, as part of the integrated, focused force, to further enhance deterrence by holding potential adversary forces and infrastructure at risk from a greater distance.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Air Marshal Stephen Chappell<\/strong> &mdash; Chief of Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>An air force that can hold ships at risk from beyond 370 km and fixed targets from 900 km makes an approach across open water considerably less attractive. That is the calculation, and it is why the announcement is written the way it is.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Initial operational capability is not full capability. It means the weapon has been integrated, crews have been trained and the system has been fired successfully, not that stocks are deep or that every squadron is equipped.
