That sentence, buried in an Airbus press release, is the reason the French armed forces have just ordered eight of these aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 10 September 2026 France&rsquo;s Aeronautical Maintenance Directorate placed a follow-on order with Airbus Helicopters for four U050 Capa-X systems, each comprising two uncrewed aircraft. Two systems go to the Navy, two to the Army. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It is a small order for a small aircraft, and it is a much better indicator of where European drone procurement is actually going than most of the billion-euro headlines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 24px;margin:26px 0;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF\">\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px;color:#222\">Kurzinfo<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin:4px 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.7\"><strong>What was ordered:<\/strong> four U050 Capa-X systems, each of two uncrewed aircraft &mdash; eight airframes in total<br>\r\n<strong>Kunde:<\/strong> the Direction de la maintenance a&eacute;ronautique (DMA&eacute;), a joint-service body reporting to the French Chief of the Defence Staff<br>\r\n<strong>Recipients:<\/strong> two systems to the French Navy, two to the French Army<br>\r\n<strong>Programm:<\/strong> the Syst&egrave;me de Drone Tactique L&eacute;ger (SDTL), the light tactical drone evaluation effort<br>\r\n<strong>Angek\u00fcndigt:<\/strong> 10 September 2026, from Marignane<br>\r\n<strong>Delivery:<\/strong> 2027<br>\r\n<strong>Das Flugzeug:<\/strong> 120 kg, up to 20 kg of payload, up to 10 hours of endurance, and operation up to 100 km from its ground station on a direct data link<br>\r\n<strong>Take-off:<\/strong> conventional from a runway, or vertical from a confined area<br>\r\n<strong>Demonstrated in trials:<\/strong> a 7-hour sortie, two payloads at once, 100 km range, and a complete system that fits on two pickup trucks<br>\r\n<strong>Initial fit:<\/strong> an optronic pod for imagery intelligence, plus a signals intelligence capability<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why two pickup trucks is the specification that counts<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Large reconnaissance drones are magnificent and nearly immovable. An MQ-9 needs a runway, a hangar, a satellite link and a small town of support personnel. That is fine when you own the airfield and nobody is shooting at it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The lesson of the past four years is that those assumptions do not hold. A system you can load onto two vehicles, drive somewhere unremarkable, and launch without a prepared strip is a system that can keep operating when the airfield is a target.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The U050 Capa-X is built for that. It can take off conventionally from a runway when one is available, or vertically from a clearing when one is not. At 120 kg it is small enough to be genuinely mobile and large enough to carry two useful sensors for most of a working day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;We are honoured that the DMA&eacute; has selected our U050 Capa-X drone to equip the French Navy and Army. This is a testament to their trust and a decisive milestone for the programme, which officially enters its operational phase.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Victor Gerin-Roze<\/strong> &mdash; Head of Uncrewed Aerial Systems, Airbus Helicopters<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Buy one, try it, then buy more<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The procurement pattern here is worth noticing because it is unusual for France and unusual for Europe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The DMA&eacute; bought a single Capa-X system at the end of 2025 and handed it to several branches of the armed forces to use. They ran it on land and at sea through 2025 and into early 2026. In January 2026 France ordered the Airbus VSR700, a 760 kg uncrewed rotorcraft derived from the H&eacute;licopt&egrave;res Guimbal Cabri G2, developed with Naval Group for the Navy&rsquo;s SDAM shipborne drone programme.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Between them the two aircraft describe a layered structure: the VSR700 as the heavier shipborne system carrying maritime surveillance radar, and the Capa-X as the light, mobile tier that an army unit or a smaller vessel can operate without a dedicated flight deck.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Gerin-Roze was explicit that the aircraft is expected to grow into other roles, describing the current version as a first configuration designed to evolve. The obvious next steps for a 20 kg payload bay are electronic warfare and communications relay.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Eight airframes will not change a war.
