More than fifty years later, eight countries have collectively put around a billion dollars into making sure it can still survive a modern air defence network &mdash; and almost none of that money has gone into the airframe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It has gone into a box. On 3 September 2026 L3Harris announced it had finished building the first 35 Viper Shield electronic warfare systems and was ramping towards full-rate production of the 233 on order.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Which is a quiet way of saying that the most important upgrade on a modern fighter is usually invisible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 24px;margin:26px 0;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF\">\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px;color:#222\">Kurzinfo<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin:4px 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.7\"><strong>System:<\/strong> Viper Shield, formally the AN\/ALQ-254(V)1, an all-digital electronic warfare suite<br>\r\n<strong>Hersteller:<\/strong> L3Harris Technologies, developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force<br>\r\n<strong>Bekanntmachung:<\/strong> 3 September 2026, from Clifton, New Jersey &mdash; production of the first 35 systems complete<br>\r\n<strong>Auf Bestellung:<\/strong> 233 systems for eight allied nations, with the line ramping to full rate<br>\r\n<strong>Also new:<\/strong> the first external pod assembled using production systems<br>\r\n<strong>Designed for:<\/strong> the F-16 Block 70\/72, fully interoperable with the APG-83 AESA radar, and compatible with earlier F-16 blocks<br>\r\n<strong>Three fits:<\/strong> integrated internally on Block 70\/72, retrofitted into earlier blocks, or carried as an external pod<br>\r\n<strong>Architecture:<\/strong> software-defined, built on commercial off-the-shelf technology for smaller size, lower weight and easier upgrades<br>\r\n<strong>Investition:<\/strong> roughly one billion dollars, shared among the F-16 operators funding it<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What an electronic warfare suite actually does<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Strip away the marketing and a fighter&rsquo;s EW suite performs two jobs. First it listens, constantly, across a very wide slice of the radio spectrum, and works out what is illuminating the aircraft: a search radar, a fire-control radar, a missile seeker, and which specific type of each.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Then it lies. Having identified the threat, it transmits a signal engineered to make the enemy radar believe something untrue &mdash; that the aircraft is somewhere it is not, that there are several of them, or that there is nothing there at all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Trade reporting describes Viper Shield as pairing a digital radar warning receiver with jamming based on digital radio frequency memory. DRFM is the technique that makes modern deception work: the system captures the incoming radar pulse, stores it digitally, alters it precisely, and sends it back. Because the returned signal is a modified copy of the radar&rsquo;s own transmission, it looks exactly like a legitimate echo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NTLaMrJFMGo\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin-top:-10px\">How radar jamming works, from early noise techniques to modern digital deception.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why the F-16 needed it<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The F-16 was designed as a small, cheap, agile day fighter. Survivability came from being hard to see and hard to hit. That logic has not aged well against modern integrated air defences with long-range radars, networked sensors and missiles that no amount of agility will out-turn.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Block 70\/72 answer has been to rebuild the aircraft&rsquo;s senses: the APG-83 active electronically scanned array radar, new avionics, and now a new electronic warfare suite designed alongside them rather than bolted on afterwards. Development, laboratory work, flight testing and current production have been funded largely by foreign customers, not by the U.S. Air Force.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The $1 billion shared investment by countries operating F-16s means the U.S. Air Force and National Guard could benefit from joining the program. The foreign investment is funding development, lab testing, flight testing and current production of Viper Shield systems, which presents the United States with a savings opportunity to avoid upfront costs.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Chris Aebli<\/strong> &mdash; President, Communications &amp; Spectrum Dominance, L3Harris<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That is a sales pitch aimed squarely at Washington, and it inverts the usual pattern. Normally the U.S. services fund a system and allies buy it afterwards. Here the allies have paid to build it, and the company is inviting the U.S. Air Force to buy in at the back end and skip the development bill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The advantage for later customers is the same in reverse. Peru, which selected Viper Shield in August 2026, joins a programme with an open production line and a supply chain already running.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;We are focused on providing Peru with a low-risk EW solution through the active production line, flight test program and supply chain. That single sentence widens the market enormously.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Integrating an EW suite inside an airframe is invasive and expensive; it means wiring, antennas, cooling and recertification. A pod hangs on an existing station. For the very large number of older F-16s flying worldwide that will never be rebuilt to Block 70 standard, a pod is the difference between getting the capability and not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The counterpoint is honest: a pod occupies a hardpoint that could carry fuel or a weapon, and an external store is aerodynamically and radar-wise less elegant than an internal fit. Threat radars change their waveforms; a countermeasure that worked last year can be useless against a software update pushed to an air defence battery. A suite whose behaviour lives in code can be reprogrammed against a new threat in a way that one built around fixed hardware cannot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Whether that promise holds depends on something no press release covers: how quickly the mission data files behind it can be written, tested and distributed to eight different air forces.
