The Lithuanian authorities logged the engagement at 01:19 local time on 15 September 2026.<\/p>\r\n<p>Nobody was hurt and no damage has been reported. What the drone was, and who sent it, is still not established. Lithuania&rsquo;s National Crisis Management Centre says it most likely crossed in from Belarus.<\/p>\r\n<p>The significant part is not the aircraft. Allied detachments rotate through &#352;iauliai in northern Lithuania, and through &#196;mari in Estonia, typically holding four or five aircraft on quick reaction alert.<\/p>\r\n<p>Italy took the current &#352;iauliai rotation on 31 July 2026 with four <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/eurofighter-typhoon\/\">Eurofighter Typhoons<\/a>. On the same day, <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/turkish-f-16-baltic-air-defence-amari-estonia-2026\/\">five Turkish F-16s took over the Estonian end of the mission at &#196;mari<\/a>. Neither NATO nor Vilnius has said which detachment flew Tuesday&rsquo;s intercept; Reuters reported only &ldquo;a NATO fighter jet&rdquo;, and aviation outlet Aerotime noted the Italian Typhoons were the ones holding the alert at &#352;iauliai. The rotation is a matter of record. In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/spanish-f-18-shoots-down-drone-romania-galati-2026\/\">a Spanish Hornet made the first drone kill of the Romanian air policing mission<\/a>, and days later <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/romania-f16-cannon-sea-drone-neptun-deep-2026\/\">a Romanian F-16 used its cannon on a sea drone<\/a>. At the start of September, <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/estonia-drone-border-crossing-nato-scramble-2026\/\">a drone crossed into Estonia<\/a> and the alert was scrambled. Reuters notes that NATO&rsquo;s Baltic mission has downed stray aircraft over Estonia and Latvia this year as well.<\/p>\r\n<p>The alliance has <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/nato-700-scrambles-two-years-cavo-dragone-2026\/\">scrambled some 700 times in two years<\/a> against Russian activity near its borders. Scrambling is routine. What has changed in the past month is that the scramble now sometimes ends with a shot.<\/p>\r\n<p>There is one thread worth following without pulling too hard on it. On 14 September, the day before the Lithuanian shootdown, Poland recovered a drone from the Baltic Sea and described it as a military unmanned aircraft of Russian origin; Aerotime reported that images of it appeared consistent with the Gerbera, a cheap Russian decoy built largely of plywood and foam and used to saturate air defences. That tells you what has been flying around the Baltic. A Gerbera-class decoy is generally put in the low tens of thousands of dollars at most, and often far less. A modern air-to-air missile costs orders of magnitude more than that, and the sortie that delivers it costs more again. An air force that answers every decoy with a missile is being bled deliberately.<\/p>\r\n<p>That mismatch is the whole reason Italy was cleared in August to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/italy-apkws-ii-air-to-air-counter-drone-fms-approval-2026\/\">5,031 APKWS II rockets for air-to-air counter-drone use<\/a>, a laser-guided 70 mm rocket at a small fraction of a missile&rsquo;s price. Whether anything of that kind was used over Lithuania is unknown.
