She stayed at the console. It means attacking something without a warhead. In this case, almost certainly, jamming an adversary&rsquo;s satellite communications so that whatever was being coordinated over that link stopped being coordinated.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The detail that gives the story its weight is the location. She was under missile attack while doing it. Space warfare is routinely described as remote, antiseptic and conducted from Colorado. But the 42nd EWCD has been photographed in the Middle East since at least 2024, and the pictures show large trailer-mounted multi-band antennas of a kind long associated with the Counter Communications System.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>CCS is a ground-based jammer. Its job is uplink jamming: drowning out the signal going from an adversary&rsquo;s ground station up to a satellite, so the satellite never receives it. Crucially the effect is reversible. Nothing is destroyed, nothing becomes debris, and when you stop transmitting the link comes back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It entered service in 2004 and the Block 10.2 version reached initial operating capability in March 2020. Until this week it was the only anti-satellite weapon the United States publicly admitted owning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That last point stopped being true during the same speech, when Schiess said something the Space Force had never said out loud.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Today, Guardians operate on-orbit weapons that can defend the Joint Force against space-enabled attacks.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Gen. It was about permission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;When the order came for Epic Fury, the Space Force was a part of the decision calculus on whether we could execute the joint campaign at all; we were part of the minimum force package. The Joint Force made it clear: without the Space Force&rsquo;s capabilities the Joint Force could not, and would not, move forward.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Gen. Douglas Schiess<\/strong> &mdash; On the Space Force\u2019s role in the Epic Fury decision<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A minimum force package is the list of things a commander must have before committing forces. Being on that list is a bureaucratic milestone and a genuine one. It means the campaign was not planned with space support assumed in the background; it was planned around whether space support would be there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Asked afterwards what the service had learned, Schiess listed the unglamorous things: keeping satellite communications up, keeping GPS and timing working, and missile warning and tracking. On that last one he was blunt about why it mattered, which was telling people on the ground to get into a bunker.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He also offered the plainest explanation yet of why space operators end up in danger at all: &ldquo;Sometimes we have to be within the footprint of the satellite, and so that&rsquo;s why Guardians go into harm&rsquo;s way.&rdquo; A jammer has to be under the thing it is jamming.
