On 17 September a Fighting Falcon went down in northern Michigan, and there too the pilot got out before impact.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two losses in a week is not, by itself, evidence of a fleet-wide problem. The F-16 is the most numerous fighter in American service and has been flying since the 1970s; accidents cluster by chance as readily as by cause. But the airframes are old, the flying hours are high, and the Air Force is running its remaining Falcon squadrons hard while the F-35 and the F-47 absorb the budget.
