USAFE\u2019s fighter units in West Germany were too far east to get useful warning of an attack. Moving them west of the Rhine bought minutes, and minutes were the whole game.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>France agreed to host new airfields in its occupation zone. Spangdahlem went up between 1951 and 1953 for about $27 million, built by French and German contractors under the supervision of a French government agency. The first Americans \u2014 the 7352d Air Base Squadron, up from F\u00fcrstenfeldbruck near Munich \u2014 arrived on 1 September 1952 with orders to get the place ready for somebody else.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">First job: looking<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing arrived from France in May 1953 with about 1,900 people. It flew RF-80 Shooting Stars by day and RB-26 Invaders by night, then RB-57 Canberras, then RF-84F Thunderflashes, then RB-66 Destroyers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In August 1959 it left for RAF Alconbury and the base changed jobs for the first time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Second job: nuclear strike<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The 49th Tactical Fighter Wing arrived the same day, from Etain-Rouvres in France, and it arrived for a political reason. In 1957 the French government decreed that all nuclear weapons and their delivery aircraft had to leave French soil. The 49th\u2019s nuclear-capable F-100 Super Sabres had to go somewhere, and Spangdahlem was somewhere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1961 the wing converted to the F-105 Thunderchief, only the third USAF unit to get the Thud. F-4D Phantoms began arriving in March 1967. In July 1968 the 49th went home to Holloman, and the base changed jobs again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lxwRx-K03Gg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Third job: the only one of its kind<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The 52d Tactical Fighter Wing was transferred in on the last day of 1971 \u2014 on paper only, without personnel or equipment \u2014 and inherited what was already there. Over the following years it assembled something no other wing outside the United States had.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The electronic warfare squadron came first: the 39th TEWS with EB-66s, replaced in 1973 by the 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron on EF-4C Phantoms under a project called Creek Action. The 480th TFS activated in November 1976. By 1977 the wing had three squadrons and a nickname problem: the 23rd were the Fighting Hawks, the 480th the Warhawks, and the 81st the Wild Weasels.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1979 the 81st traded EF-4Cs for the far more capable F-4G. Photo: US Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Every squadron got a mix of F-4E and F-4G Phantoms, paired into hunter-killer teams: one aircraft to find the radar, one to kill it, in any weather. The 52nd became the first and only all-defence-suppression wing outside the United States.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The war it was built for, fought somewhere else<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Spangdahlem spent forty years preparing to roll back Soviet air defences across the inner German border. When the Weasels finally went to war, they went to Bahrain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In late 1990 the 81st TFS reorganised to fly the F-4G exclusively and sent 24 aircraft to Sheikh Isa Air Base. Working alongside the 35th TFW from George AFB, F-4G crews flew 3,942 combat sorties in Desert Storm, fired a thousand air-to-ground missiles, destroyed 200 Iraqi missile sites, and accounted for 74 percent of all enemy missile radars destroyed in the war. One F-4G was lost, on 18 January, after enemy fire holed a fuel tank; the crew ejected safely after a fifth failed landing attempt.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We were taking down their air defense system so their SAM sites were on \u2018autonomous\u2019 mode, which meant they were, in effect, looking through a soda straw searching for us.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Lt. James \u201cAugie\u201d Kuxhaus<\/strong> &mdash; F-4G electronic warfare officer, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Getting smaller<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>F-16s replaced the Phantoms in the 23rd and 480th from April 1987; the last operational USAF F-4E left Spangdahlem in December 1987, and the F-4Gs went to the boneyard in February 1994.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Then the consolidation. Bitburg closed and sent its F-15Cs and the 53rd Fighter Squadron over in 1994. RAF Bentwaters closed and sent the A-10s of the 510th. The 53rd inactivated in 1999. In April 2010 the wing lost a third of its strength in one go, twenty F-16s flying out to the Minnesota Air National Guard. In August that year the 22nd and 23rd Fighter Squadrons were inactivated and merged into a reborn 480th. The 480th Fighter Squadron, on Block 50 F-16CM\/DM, carrying the same mission the 81st carried: find the radar, kill the radar, so everyone else can get through.
