It could be weather. It could be a crew cutting a corner over an unremarkable stretch of Warmia. Any of those explanations would be entirely plausible on their own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>They are less plausible as the latest entry in a list. Poland has spent the past two years absorbing a sequence of these: around twenty Russian drones crossing the eastern border on a single night last September, some shot down by Polish and allied forces; a Russian Su-24 and a naval helicopter over Polish territorial waters in the Baltic; two Belarusian helicopters crossing briefly in 2023; and, most recently, a missile. Each incident is individually deniable and individually trivial. Each one forces a NATO member to spend money, launch aircraft, and make a decision under time pressure. And each one produces a data point about how fast the alliance reacts and how far it is willing to go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Problem With Responding Correctly<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Poland did what the rulebook says. It tracked, it scrambled, it raised readiness, it published. Every part of that is the right answer, and every part of it is also the answer an adversary would want to measure.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Shooting at a helicopter three hundred metres inside your border, over open ground, in peacetime, is not a serious option and everyone involved knows it. The result is a standing asymmetry: the violation costs Russia a few minutes of flight time, and the response costs Poland fuel, hours on airframes, crew rest and a place in the news cycle.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What makes this one worth recording is the type. Drones and fast jets over water have happened before. A crewed Russian army helicopter crossing the land border appears to be new, and a helicopter is not a machine that strays across a frontier by accident at low level in daylight with its own radar picture of where the line is.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Forty-two seconds is a very short time.
