The 1st Aviation Regiment has flown its last operational Tiger flight in Darwin, and the fleet of 22 Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters, which ABC News says cost A$1.1 billion, is being retired by the end of September 2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Tiger was originally due to leave service in 2027 or 2028. Instead it is going early, replaced by the Boeing <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/ah-64-apache\/\">AH-64E Apache<\/a>. The Tiger is small, fast and very agile, and the people who flew it say so without hesitation. Speaking to the ABC before the last flights, one of the regiment's pilots summed it up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I'm going to miss most of the manoeuvrability of the Tiger \u2014 it's an absolute Ferrari to fly on&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Capt. Nicholas Bilton<\/strong> &mdash; Tiger pilot, 1st Aviation Regiment, speaking to ABC News<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>For the final flight, the Tigers flew over Darwin's Mindil Beach Markets, a fitting farewell for a helicopter that had been a familiar sight over the city for two decades. Lt. Col. The first two arrived on 15 December 2004, and 18 were assembled at Australian Aerospace in Brisbane. The last was handed over in December 2011, but it took until 18 April 2016 for the fleet to be declared fully operational, more than 14 years after the order.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>There were problems along the way. In 2012, after three incidents with fumes in the cockpit, pilots refused to fly the helicopter until the cause was dealt with. The bigger problems, though, were less dramatic and more expensive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why Australia Gave Up<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The Australian Tiger was a special version. It was built to Australian requirements and differed from the French, German and Spanish helicopters. That meant a small fleet with few parts shared with anyone else.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>When the government announced in January 2021 that it would buy 29 AH-64E Apache Guardians instead, the reasons given were clear: a lack of commonality with other Tiger variants, the high cost of maintaining the engines, and the time it took to ship parts to Europe for repair and back. For a helicopter based in northern Australia, Europe is a long way away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The retirement date was brought forward too. Six AH-64Es have already been delivered to Townsville, and all 29 are expected by the end of 2029. The 1st Aviation Regiment is moving with them, from Robertson Barracks in Darwin to RAAF Base Townsville. The Albanese government considered donating the Tigers to Ukraine, and Ukraine's ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, has said Ukraine would be interested.
