Three vans, apparently heading towards <strong>RAF Fairford<\/strong>, the Gloucestershire airfield that has launched American bombers against Iran for most of this year. By dawn on Sunday 27 September, five men were in custody, an Army bomb-disposal robot was working its way between the vehicles, and around 85 households in the village of Whelford had been told to leave their homes.<\/p>\r\n<p>Britain's counter-terrorism police now lead the case. The five were first arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, then held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Several British papers report that detectives are examining a possible Iran link. Armed officers responded and arrested five men in the Whelford area, the village that backs directly onto Fairford's perimeter. The men were taken into custody and remained there through Sunday.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Telegraph, as cited by AeroTime, reported that the caller was a local farmer driving home who saw masked men run into the fields. Police statements themselves only describe a call about the vehicles.<\/p>\r\n<p>By morning the Army's explosive ordnance disposal specialists were on scene. Helicopter footage aired by Sky News showed a robot moving between three white vans, two with their rear doors open and dark objects strewn around them. A US Air Force spokesperson declined to discuss force-protection measures, citing operational security.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Trump Says More Is Coming<\/h2>\r\n<p>Speaking to reporters in Chicago on Sunday, President Donald Trump praised the operation and said the suspects had been watched for a long time. \"We had them under view for a long time and we got them,\" he said, adding that they were looking to do \"big damage.\"<\/p>\r\n<p>British police have not corroborated that account. Their statements describe arrests that followed a public call about the vans, and make no reference to prior surveillance. Later that evening at Joint Base Andrews, Trump told reporters that more details would emerge soon. He did not elaborate.<\/p>\r\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Update, 29 September: All Five Released on Bail<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>On the afternoon of Monday 28 September, Counter Terrorism Policing announced that all five men had been released on police bail after what it called extensive interviews and inquiries. They are British nationals from London, aged 23 to 25. None has been charged.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #c0392b;padding:22px 26px;margin:30px 0\"><p style=\"font-size:19px;line-height:1.6;font-style:italic;margin:0 0 12px\">&ldquo;To be very clear, this does not mean that the investigation is over.&rdquo;<\/p><p style=\"margin:0;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Laurence Taylor<\/strong>, Assistant Commissioner and Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, 28 September 2026<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Taylor said the five are bound by stringent conditions on their movement and on contact with others, and that detectives are considering the case &ldquo;from every possible angle&rdquo;, including the possibility of activity carried out by proxies. Investigators are looking at possible links to Iran, to Russia and to non-state militant groups. Taylor also pointed out that this kind of threat often first appears as small-scale criminal activity by people whose main aim is quick money rather than terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>What the three vans contained has still not been made public. Euronews reported that no viable explosives were found; police have not confirmed details. The Whelford residents were allowed home on Monday afternoon, with a cordon kept around the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&rsquo;s embassy in London said it &ldquo;categorically rejects and strongly condemns&rdquo; what it called unfounded and malicious speculation. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting thanked the anonymous caller whose tip started the operation, while noting that the caller had only a partial picture of what was going on. Washington was blunter. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m surprised that they released them. I wouldn&rsquo;t have done it,&rdquo; President Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio went further. Speaking on Fox News on Monday evening, he called what could have happened in Britain over the weekend &ldquo;a very serious situation&rdquo; and said it &ldquo;clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor&rdquo;.
