Paramedics were waiting. Portugal's civil protection service told AFP that 14 people needed assistance after landing and four were taken to hospital with light smoke inhalation. Reuters, citing the same authority, reported eight passengers treated on the tarmac and three taken to hospital.<\/p>\r\n<p>What caused the smoke has not been made public. About two hours in, the crew declared the emergency and asked for the nearest suitable airport.<\/p>\r\n<p>That decision point is the whole story of a transatlantic smoke event. Heading west, the next runways are hours away over open water. Turning around puts a large, familiar airport such as Porto within reach in well under an hour. Until the crew knows which, they treat it as the worst case.<\/p>\r\n<p>Portuguese outlets including P\u00fablico, Expresso and CNN Portugal all reported smoke in the cabin as the reason for the landing, as did Reuters and AFP. Some early English-language flight-tracking reports described a medical situation on board. That was very likely the first sign of the same event: passengers reacting to the smoke. AirLive later reported that Portuguese media said 12 people were given oxygen during the flight. Treat that figure with care until an official account appears.<\/p>\r\n<p>AirLive also reported that Delta planned to continue the flight to Boston the following day, and that two connecting flights were cancelled because the aircraft and crew were out of position.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Season of Atlantic Smoke Diversions<\/h2>\r\n<p>It has been a busy season for this kind of event. Afterburner covered a SWISS A330 that diverted to Bangor with smoke in July and a SWISS flight turned back to Dublin by a power bank in August. Most such events end the way DL251 did: a quick turn, an early landing, and a few passengers checked out as a precaution.<\/p>\r\n<p>That is the system working. No airliner is expected to push on across an ocean with an unexplained smoke source.
