Its market is, in the words of local rescuers, the region&rsquo;s main wholesale centre, the place where traders from surrounding villages buy and sell. Witness accounts relayed by rescue workers describe a fighter jet dropping two bombs near the market around midday. Buildings caught fire, vehicles were wrecked and part of a nearby bridge was destroyed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The first reports on Monday counted 33 dead and 36 wounded. With its ground forces routed or besieged across the region, the junta has leaned on the one advantage no rebel group can match: aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That pattern has defined the civil war since the February 2021 coup. Resistance forces field drones, rifles and captured artillery, but no fighters and almost no air defences. The result is an air campaign that repeatedly hits markets, schools, monasteries and hospitals in opposition-held areas. In April 2023 a fighter jet and Mi-35 helicopters attacked a crowd gathered in Pazigyi village in Sagaing Region, killing more than 160 people.
