Yet behind the locked cockpit door of almost every airliner you board, there is an axe. It is not a secret and it is not a loophole. Aviation regulators require it, and they have done so for decades.

The crash axe was an obscure piece of emergency equipment until 30 September 2026, when it became the centre of the flydubai FZ1073 investigation. Here is what the axe is actually for, what the rules say, how it is built and stowed, and why the question of whether it belongs in the cockpit is suddenly being asked.

Quick Facts

What it is: A short, insulated emergency axe carried on the flight deck of airliners

Main uses: Breaking open panels to reach a hidden fire, and breaking out of a damaged aircraft

US rule: 14 CFR 121.309(e): each airplane must be equipped with a crash ax (with a narrow exception)

EU rule: CAT.IDE.A.255: at least one crash axe or crowbar in the flight crew compartment

Large aircraft: More than 200 passenger seats: a second axe or crowbar in or near the rearmost galley

Typical example: About 15 inches long, about 2.5 lb, insulated handle

What the Crash Axe Is For

The name suggests something dramatic, but the crash axe is mostly a firefighting tool. Modern aircraft are full of wiring, ducts and insulation hidden behind lining panels. A fire that starts behind a panel can smoulder out of reach of an extinguisher nozzle. The axe lets the crew break that panel open so that the extinguisher can be aimed at the source.

Its second job is escape and rescue. As the Associated Press summarised it after the flydubai incident, crash axes can be used in an emergency to break open a window to escape or to break open a panel to reach a fire. After a crash or a hard landing, doors and exits can jam, and the axe gives the crew a way to cut or pry their way out, or to reach people who are trapped.

Ask The Captain on how a crash axe is actually used on board.

What the Rules Say

In the United States, the requirement is one sentence in the airline operating rules. Section 121.309(e) of the Federal Aviation Regulations says that, except for nontransport category airplanes type certificated after 31 December 1964, each airplane must be equipped with a crash ax.

European rules are more specific about where the axe goes. Under EASA rule CAT.IDE.A.255, aeroplanes with a maximum certified take-off mass of more than 5,700 kg, or with more than nine passenger seats, must carry at least one crash axe or crowbar in the flight crew compartment. Aircraft with more than 200 passenger seats need an additional crash axe or crowbar in or near the rearmost galley. Any axe or crowbar in the passenger compartment must not be visible to passengers.

European rules say any crash axe or crowbar in the passenger compartment must be stowed out of sight of passengers. One model sold to aircraft operators, listed against US military reference 42D8331, is about 15 inches long, weighs about 2.5 pounds, has a drop-forged steel head and a rubber handle insulated to 20,000 volts.

The insulation matters because the axe is meant to be swung into panels that may hide live wiring. Some versions are sold with a serrated edge instead of a smooth one.

Times Radio asks an aviation expert why cockpits contain a crash axe.

Where It Is Kept

On most airliners the axe sits on the flight deck, stowed in a bracket or a cover. Experts quoted by The New York Times after the flydubai incident said the axes are often kept behind the co-pilot, covered but unlocked. That placement is deliberate. In a fire or a crash the crew need the tool in seconds, not after finding a key.

It also reflects the security thinking that followed 11 September 2001. Once the cockpit door was reinforced and locked, the flight deck became the most secure place on the aircraft, and keeping emergency tools there put them out of reach of anyone in the cabin.

The flydubai FZ1073 Case

That assumption was tested on 30 September 2026, when flydubai FZ1073 diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia after one pilot attacked the other in flight. Early reports spoke of a knife. The Emirati attorney general later described the weapon as the aircraft’s own crash axe.

“The co-pilot initiated the execution of his plot during the flight, assaulting the pilot inside the cockpit using an emergency crash ax and attempting to take control of the aircraft’s flight controls.”
Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi — Attorney General of the United Arab Emirates, as reported by The New York Times

The investigation is still at an early stage, and much about the co-pilot and his motive has not been established.
