They had flown down from Sacheon in South Korea, where Korea Aerospace Industries builds them, and they are the first two of eighteen <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/kai-t-50-golden-eagle\/\">FA-50M<\/a> light combat aircraft ordered by the Royal Malaysian Air Force.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin was on the ramp to receive them, according to Bernama and Malay Mail. Labuan, an island off the coast of Sabah on Borneo, was only a transit stop. The jets' home will be RMAF Kuantan Air Base on the peninsula, where the official handover ceremony is planned for mid-November.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For an air force that has spent years juggling ageing Hawks and a small fleet of Flankers, the arrival is a long-awaited step. KAI announced the roughly US$920 million deal in February 2023 and the final contract was signed in May that year. The FA-50 beat a crowded field that included India's Tejas, Italy's M-346, Turkey's H\u00fcrjet and Pakistan's JF-17.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The FA-50 is the armed member of KAI's T-50 Golden Eagle family, which was developed with Lockheed Martin. It is a two-seat, single-engine supersonic jet powered by a General Electric F404 turbofan, with a radar, a gun and pylons for missiles and guided bombs. In other words, it looks and flies like a small fighter, which is exactly what makes it useful as a stepping stone to one.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The schedule set out by the minister is brisk. Six FA-50Ms are due by April 2027, and the rest are expected in early 2028.
