On Monday, 2 November 2026, MBDA Deutschland announced that the Bundeswehr’s procurement agency, BAAINBw, has contracted it to build an airborne laser demonstrator: a pod that could one day let Luftwaffe aircraft burn drones and cruise missiles out of the sky without firing a single missile.

It is Germany’s first formal step into airborne laser weapons. MBDA itself describes airborne laser development as the “supreme discipline” of laser weapon technology. Mais oui: putting a high-energy laser on a ship is hard, putting one in a pod that has to survive the vibration, cold and g-loads of flight is harder still.

Quick Facts

Programme: Airborne laser weapon demonstrator for the Bundeswehr

Contractor: MBDA Deutschland

Customer: BAAINBw, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support

Announced: 2 November 2026

Format: Pod-based demonstrator, key components designed for flight from the start

Main targets: Drones and cruise missiles (MBDA)

Not disclosed: Contract value, host aircraft, laser power, schedule

What MBDA Has Been Asked to Build

According to MBDA, the project centres on a laser pod whose essential components are already being designed, and the job is to lay the technological foundations for future airborne laser weapons. The longer-term goal is a capability that could shoot down drones and cruise missiles. MBDA also sees uses in protecting ships, ground vehicles, troops and critical infrastructure.

MBDA announced the contract on X:

What the announcement leaves out is almost as interesting as what it says. There is no contract value, no laser power class, no development timeline and no named host aircraft. The accompanying artwork shows two large, stealthy, uncrewed fighter-like aircraft with laser pods slung under their fuselages, but that is an illustration of the idea rather than a commitment to a platform.

Why an Airborne Laser Is the Hardest Kind

A laser weapon on a frigate can draw on the ship’s generators and dump heat into the sea. An aircraft pod has none of those luxuries. Every kilogram, every litre of coolant and every kilowatt of electrical power has to be found inside a streamlined shape that must survive vibration, temperature swings and manoeuvring loads. MBDA says exactly that: the size, weight and robustness requirements for flight are what make the airborne version so demanding.

The prize is magazine depth. A missile is gone once it is fired. A laser keeps shooting for as long as there is power and cooling. Against waves of cheap one-way attack drones, that arithmetic matters, and it is why air forces from the United States to the United Kingdom are chasing the same goal. The most famous earlier attempt, the U.S. YAL-1, needed an entire Boeing 747 to carry its megawatt-class chemical laser. Germany is aiming for a pod.

MBDA’s artwork for the programme shows laser pods under large uncrewed aircraft. No host aircraft has been named. Image: MBDA

The Naval Laser That Came First

MBDA is not starting from zero. Laser technology has been a strategic research priority for Germany since 2019 and is listed as a key national technology in the government’s security and defence industry strategy. MBDA says it has worked on laser weapon technology since 2008.

The best-known result sailed on the frigate Sachsen. MBDA and Rheinmetall won a BAAINBw contract in January 2021 for a naval laser demonstrator, which was installed aboard the ship in June 2022. Over six test campaigns lasting nearly a year, it fired more than a hundred times, and during a demonstration it shot down a drone, according to Rheinmetall.

The containerised MBDA and Rheinmetall laser weapon demonstrator aboard the German Navy frigate Sachsen during its sea trials. Photo: Bundeswehr

That work has already turned into an order. On 9 July 2026, BAAINBw contracted the MBDA and Rheinmetall working group to develop a high-energy laser weapon for the German Navy, valued by Rheinmetall in the mid three-digit millions of euros and expected to be operational in 2029. At the signing, MBDA Deutschland’s managing director pointed to uses well beyond the warship:

“The containerised laser effector will also be cost-efficient for port security and other applications.”
Thomas Gottschild — Managing Director, MBDA Deutschland, on the naval laser contract, 9 July 2026

What Germany’s Airborne Laser Means for the Luftwaffe

For now this is a demonstrator, not a weapon programme, and nobody has said which aircraft will carry it. The Luftwaffe flies the Eurofighter Typhoon today and is buying the F-35A, while the rendering hints at future uncrewed combat aircraft. Each would pose very different power and cooling questions.

What the contract does settle is the direction of travel. Berlin has a working naval laser on the way and now wants to know whether the same physics can fly. If MBDA cracks the pod, a fighter’s answer to a swarm of drones might one day be measured in seconds of beam time rather than in expensive missiles.

Sources: MBDA Deutschland, TWZ, AeroTime, Janes, Rheinmetall

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What is the MBDA airborne laser demonstrator?

It is a pod-based laser weapon demonstrator that MBDA Deutschland is building for the Bundeswehr under a contract from the BAAINBw procurement agency, announced on 2 November 2026.
