When the Curacao-flagged M\/T Belma pressed on toward Kharg Island despite warnings, a U.S. aircraft disabled it with Hellfire missiles fired into the ship\u2019s funnel &mdash; a deliberately non-sinking way to stop a vessel dead.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The commercial vessel ignored multiple warnings as it attempted to violate the U.S. blockade.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>U.S. Central Command<\/strong> &mdash; Official statement, 15 July 2026<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>That same day, CENTCOM said it completed a 90-minute wave of strikes against coastal-defence systems and cruise-missile storage and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island, along with targets near Bandar Abbas &mdash; all of it aimed, in the command\u2019s words, at Iranian capabilities used to threaten vessels transiting the strait.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/a\/ae\/Strait_of_hormuz_full.jpg\" alt=\"Map of the Strait of Hormuz\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">The Strait of Hormuz, roughly 30 miles wide at its narrowest \u2014 the chokepoint the strikes are meant to keep open. Map: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Carriers, drones and boarding parties<\/h2><p>By 16 July the strikes had run five consecutive nights, with fighter jets, aerial drones and warships hitting coastal surveillance, air-defence sites, logistics and maritime targets. The blockade itself is a sprawling effort: more than 10,000 sailors, Marines and airmen, two carriers &mdash; among them USS George H.W. Bush with its 60-plus aircraft &mdash; and over 20 warships.<\/p><p>It is not all missiles. U.S. Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the tanker M\/T Wen Yao in the Gulf of Oman to verify compliance. During the earlier April-to-June blockade, CENTCOM says it redirected more than 140 compliant vessels, disabled nine that refused, and waved through over 50 ships carrying humanitarian aid.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The stakes beyond the strait<\/h2><p>Around a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil &mdash; some 20 million barrels a day &mdash; passes through this 30-mile-wide gap between Iran and Oman. There is almost no way to route around it at scale. That is why a single disabled tanker and a night of strikes ripple far beyond the Gulf, into insurance markets, oil prices and the calculations of every government that depends on the crude flowing west and east from the Persian Gulf.<\/p><p>For now, the pattern holds: warnings, then Hellfires; a wave of strikes, then another the next night. The U.S. is betting that overwhelming, visible force keeps the strait open.
