It was a barn with wings: a slab-sided freighter with a wingspan of 55.2 metres (181 ft 1 in), a nose that split open into clamshell doors, and a cargo hold eleven metres long into which the Wehrmacht could drive a truck. It was the largest land-based transport aircraft to fly in the Second World War, and for a short time it was genuinely useful. Then, on one April morning over the Mediterranean, it became a lesson in what happens when something very large moves very slowly through contested air.

Quick Facts: Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant

Role: Heavy transport — powered development of the Me 321 glider; the largest land-based transport of WWII

Power: Six French-built Gnome-Rhône 14N radials, ~1,180 PS (1,164 hp) each for take-off

Span / length: 55.2 m (181 ft) / 28.2 m (92 ft 6 in); max weight ~43,000 kg

Payload: ~10,000 to 12,000 kg — an 8.8 cm Flak gun and crew, two trucks, or ~130 troops

Speed / defence: Cruise ~210 to 220 km/h (130 to 135 mph); six 13 mm MG 131 guns

Built: ~200 (about 198 new, up to 213 with conversions), 1942 to 1944

From glider to giant

The Gigant did not begin as an aeroplane at all. In 1940, with the planned invasion of Britain in mind, the German air ministry asked for a heavy assault glider capable of lifting an 8.8 cm gun and its tractor, or a Panzer IV medium tank. Messerschmitt’s answer became the Me 321, an enormous towed glider that saw service on the Eastern Front. Towing it was the problem: it needed either the five-engined Heinkel He 111Z or a dangerous formation of three twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110s to drag it into the air. The obvious fix was to give the glider its own engines. That powered variant became the Me 323.

Six French engines and a nose that opened

The Me 323 was, unusually, powered by captured industry. Rather than burden Germany’s strained engine plants, Messerschmitt fitted six French-built Gnome-Rhône 14N radials, fourteen-cylinder air-cooled units each giving about 1,180 PS (1,164 hp; 868 kW) for take-off. Three turned clockwise and three anti-clockwise to cancel out torque. Even with all six running, the aircraft was chronically underpowered, and at maximum weight it still needed rocket-assisted take-off units slung beneath the wings to get airborne.

Weight-saving dictated the whole structure. Much of the wing was plywood and fabric; the fuselage was a welded steel-tube frame under doped fabric, heavily braced in the floor to carry the load. The undercarriage was extraordinary: a small bogie of wheels at the front and two lines of larger wheels along each side of the fuselage, giving ten main wheels in all, with pneumatic brakes that could stop the aircraft in 200 metres (660 ft). Maximum payload was on the order of 10,000 to 12,000 kg (22,000 to 26,500 lb). The hold, roughly 11 m long, 3 m wide and 3.4 m high, could take an 8.8 cm Flak gun with its accessories, two 3.6-tonne trucks, a heavy field howitzer, around 130 troops, or, in one much-quoted manifest, 8,700 loaves of bread. This was the capability nothing else in the theatre offered. In the Mediterranean airlift that kept Rommel’s Afrika Korps supplied after Axis shipping losses mounted, the Gigants delivered thousands of tonnes of cargo, including guns, trucks and armoured vehicles, across hundreds of sorties between late 1942 and April 1943.

Slow, low, and full of petrol

The defect was speed, or the lack of it. Loaded, the Me 323 cruised at about 210 to 220 km/h (130 to 135 mph) and could manage little more flat out; a Junkers Ju 52 was some 80 km/h faster. It carried six 13 mm MG 131 machine guns and could, in fact, absorb remarkable punishment: German crews nicknamed it the “Leukoplast-Bomber,” the sticking-plaster bomber, because it kept flying after hits that would have destroyed lesser machines. But a wooden aircraft full of drummed petrol has a different arithmetic, and the Allies had worked it out.

On 22 April 1943, a formation of the giants set out from Italy for Tunisia carrying fuel, escorted by Bf 109s of Jagdgeschwader 27. When the escort drifted off and the transports scattered to avoid a formation of friendly Ju 52s, South African and RAF Spitfires and P-40 Kittyhawks fell on them near the island of Zembra, off Cap Bon. The result was not a battle but a slaughter.

“Allied tactical aircraft found a German compound of large six-engine transport planes, accompanied by 40 to 50 fighters, and within ten minutes destroyed all the transport planes.”
Allied Force Headquarters communiqué — issued 23 April 1943 (an Allied claim that overstates the numbers)

That communiqué, issued the next day, is worth reading with a sceptic’s eye. German records are more sober, and more instructive. Of the aircraft dispatched, fourteen Me 323s were shot down; of 138 men aboard the giants, only nineteen survived. Allied accounts describe a formation of around twenty, and several English-language references still cite twenty-seven transports with sixteen to twenty-one lost. The figures do not fully reconcile, which is itself the honest answer: sources disagree, and the true count of the formation sits somewhere between the German and Allied tallies. What is not in dispute is the outcome. In minutes, most of a formation of the largest aircraft in the theatre simply burned and fell into the sea.

A Gigant caught low over the sea off Corsica, July 1943, filmed from the attacking aircraft — the exact situation that doomed the type over the Sicilian Strait. RAF gun-camera film.

The reckoning, and the record

It is easy to file the Gigant under folly, the slow monster that was always going to be shot down. That is too neat. For five months it did work that no other aircraft could do, and its structural toughness was real. Its problem was circumstantial: flown low and slow over water the Allies had learned to patrol, loaded with fuel, and stripped of its escort at the wrong moment. After 22 April, transport flights to Tunisia were ordered to be made only at night, which cut losses and cut deliveries in equal measure.

Production tells the rest. Something close to 200 Gigants were built, with sources giving about 198 new aircraft and up to 213 in total once the Me 321 conversions are counted, before the line closed in 1944. No complete example survives; a wing spar is held in Berlin, and in 2012 a wreck was located in some 60 metres of water off Sardinia. The Gigant was the right idea, executed at the wrong speed. It could carry almost anything the German army owned, and its tragedy was that it had to carry it in daylight.

The Me 323 is the answer to a question no one else in the war tried seriously to ask: how large can a transport aircraft usefully be?
