Beside him, in the reconnaissance systems officer's seat, sat Jim Zwayer. A few hours later, one of them would be dead, and the other would have done something no human had done before or has done since: survive an SR-71 tearing itself apart at Mach 3.18.

What makes the story extraordinary is not just that Weaver lived. It is that he never touched the ejection handle. The airplane simply disintegrated around him, flung him into the stratosphere at more than three times the speed of sound, and his pressure suit did the rest.

Quick Facts

Date

25 January 1966

Aircraft

Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird (tail 952)

Crew

Bill Weaver (pilot), Jim Zwayer (RSO)

Conditions

Mach 3.18, ~78,000 feet

Test

Aft center-of-gravity handling

Cause

Right inlet "unstart" and violent departure from control

Outcome

Weaver survived; Zwayer killed — the only death aboard an SR-71

A test at the edge of the envelope

The flight was investigating ways to reduce drag and improve high-Mach cruise by flying with the center of gravity further aft than normal. That made the Blackbird less stable on purpose — exactly the kind of test that has to be flown, carefully, at the limits. Cruising at Mach 3.2 and 78,000 feet, the aircraft's right engine inlet control system failed, and Weaver switched to manual.

To understand what happened next, you need to understand the Blackbird's inlets. At Mach 3, air has to be slowed to subsonic speed before it reaches the engine, and a moving cone — the "spike" — plus a set of bypass doors did that job by holding a shock wave in exactly the right place. Lose control of that shock wave and it can be violently spat back out of the inlet: an "unstart." The result is instant thrust loss on one side, a bang like a train wreck, and a savage yaw.

Two or three seconds

As the crew entered a programmed 35-degree bank to the right, the right engine unstarted. The aircraft rolled harder right and pitched up. Weaver slammed the stick full left and forward. Nothing. He tried to tell Zwayer to stay with the aircraft until they slowed down — he doubted anyone could survive an ejection at Mach 3.18 — but the g-forces built so fast his words came out as garble, later confirmed by the cockpit voice recorder.

The forces exceeded everything the flight controls and stability system could do. Weaver blacked out. From event onset to total loss of control was, he learned afterwards, just two or three seconds. He wasn't dead. He was falling, blind, his pressure suit's faceplate frozen opaque, the emergency oxygen bottle keeping the suit inflated. That inflation did two things: it kept his blood from boiling in the near-vacuum, and it stiffened into armour against the buffeting and g-loads.

The full-pressure suit, built by the David Clark Company, was essentially a spacesuit. Weaver drifted down over the high desert where New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas meet, unable to steer because his numb hands were busy holding the broken faceplate up. He landed softly, startling an antelope. Then a voice: "Can I help you?" A rancher named Albert Mitchell Jr. had watched the parachutes come down and flown out in his two-seat helicopter.

Mitchell flew off to check on Zwayer and returned with the news Weaver had feared: Jim was dead. He had suffered a broken neck in the disintegration itself and was killed instantly — the only person ever to die aboard an SR-71. As he rotated, a warning light lit in the back seat: "Pilot Ejected." His nervous flight-test engineer called out to check he was still there. It was a misadjusted microswitch.
