The U.S. Air Force has just answered it in Europe with one of the most futuristic: a laser. Quietly, and at locations it will not name, U.S. Air Forces in Europe has fielded the Compact Laser Weapon System &mdash; a directed-energy gun that can burn a drone out of the sky for the price of the electricity it takes to fire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move, confirmed at the end of July, is the sharp end of a much bigger shift. Air bases used to worry about enemy jets and missiles. USAFE-AFAFRICA describes a layered net: sensors detect and track an intruder, operators in a base defence operations centre use the laser's optics to confirm it is actually a hostile drone &mdash; not a friendly aircraft, not a bird &mdash; and only then do the effectors come out. The war in Ukraine has shown how commercial and military drones alike can reach airfields and supply hubs far behind the front. And the probing has already crept west: between August 2024 and February 2026, the International Institute for Strategic Studies counted hundreds of Russian drones manoeuvring in the airspace of NATO members &mdash; including near bases that store U.S. nuclear weapons &mdash; apparently mapping vulnerabilities and testing how the alliance reacts. Moscow denies involvement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The modern threat has erased the idea of a safe haven; inexpensive and highly adaptable UAS technology can hold any installation or operating location at risk.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Col. A Shahed-type attack drone can cost a few tens of thousands of dollars; shooting one down with a million-dollar missile is a losing trade repeated a hundred times a night. A laser reverses the maths &mdash; the shot is nearly free, and the magazine is as deep as the generator behind it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eFiDYFnlp7s\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The safe haven is gone<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lasers are not magic. Cloud, rain and dust sap a beam, and a single emitter can only engage one target at a time. That is exactly why the Air Force is bolting them into a wider web rather than betting the base on them.
