It is the colour. The instrument panel, the side consoles and the cockpit walls are painted a vivid turquoise, somewhere between a swimming pool and a hospital corridor. Next to the jet’s bare-metal skin it looks almost unreal.

At MiGFlug, that colour produced one of the questions we heard most often. For years we flew customers in Russia in the MiG-29, the MiG-25, the MiG-31 and the Su-27. Almost every group, sooner or later, at the briefing or looking at their in-flight photos afterwards, asked the same thing: why are Russian cockpits that colour? The honest answer is more interesting than the viral one, because not all of them are.

Quick Facts

The colour: Soviet “cockpit turquoise”, a blue-green interior paint

First standard on a tactical jet: MiG-21, which entered service in 1959

Set by: cockpit standards drawn up by the Soviet Defence Ministry’s Institute of Aviation Medicine

Main reasons given: less glare, less eye strain, and good contrast for black instruments and red and yellow warning lamps

Turquoise: MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-31

Not turquoise: MiG-29 (light grey or light blue), Sukhoi types such as the Su-24, Su-25 and Su-27 (blue-grey)

Where the Turquoise Came From

Soviet cockpits were not always turquoise. Earlier aircraft used black panels and a range of greys, light blues and greens. The Soviet strategic bombers of the late 1940s inherited green interiors close to the American “interior green” of the B-29, because the Tu-4 was a copy of B-29s that had landed in the Soviet Far East in 1944. According to the colour references used by Soviet aircraft modellers and restorers, the MiG-21 was the first Soviet tactical jet to standardise the turquoise as a factory finish, and it spread from there across most Mikoyan fighters, many bombers and helicopters, and many Soviet airliners.

The decision was not a designer’s whim. Russia’s edition of Popular Mechanics traces the colour to the Soviet Defence Ministry’s Institute of Aviation Medicine, which drew up the state standard for cockpit layout, including where instruments went and which colours the cabin should be. The same article admits that the exact date of the switch from black to turquoise could not be pinned down.

A Bangladesh Air Force MiG-21UM two-seater in daylight, the turquoise still unmistakable decades later. Photo: Shadman al Samee / CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Why Turquoise: What the Sources Actually Say

The explanation usually given is about the pilot’s eyes. A fighter pilot constantly switches between a very bright sky outside and the instruments inside. Black panels kept reflections down but made that switch tiring, because the eye had to adapt from glare to darkness again and again during a sortie. A mid-tone blue-green, close to the colour of the horizon, made the jump smaller.

The second argument is contrast. Against turquoise, the black instrument bezels, the red warning lamps, the yellow caution lights and the switches all stand out equally well, so nothing important blends into the background. That is the reasoning set out by Russian Popular Mechanics, and it is the most solidly sourced part of the story.

Two other explanations are repeated so often that they deserve a caveat. The first is the comparison with surgeons, who wear green so that staring at red does not leave distracting afterimages. It is a neat analogy, but we have found no Soviet document that cites it. The second is Viktor Belenko, the pilot who defected to Japan in a MiG-25 in 1976, who is widely said to have told Western debriefers that blue-green was chosen because crews found it soothing. That claim circulates mainly through modellers’ colour guides, and we could not trace it to a primary source, so treat it as plausible rather than proven.

The Jets Our Customers Flew: Not All of Them Were Green

This is where the MiGFlug question gets a better answer than most viral videos give it.
