Honduras won the first, El Salvador the second, and El Salvador took the play-off in Mexico City after extra time. There were riots. Diplomatic relations broke.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the matches were a detonator on a charge that had been laid over decades. In El Salvador, five per cent of farms held seventy per cent of the land, leaving perhaps 200,000 peasants with none. They went to Honduras, which had space. By 1969 roughly 300,000 Salvadorans lived there &mdash; more than a tenth of Honduras&rsquo;s entire population.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then Honduras enforced a 1962 land reform law that redistributed land occupied by Salvadoran immigrants to native-born Hondurans, regardless of who had cleared and farmed it. In 1969 it declined to renew the bilateral immigration treaty. Tens of thousands of Salvadorans began moving back to a country with no land for them.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8WOdS1FoL3M\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The name &ldquo;Football War&rdquo; was coined by the Polish reporter Ryszard Kapu&#347;ci&#324;ski, who covered it. It has stuck globally and is not much liked by the people who fought it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Seventeenth of July<\/h2><p>El Salvador opened the war on the evening of 14 July, striking Honduran airfields with a mixed bag that included a C-47 with men pushing 100-pound bombs out of the cargo door.<\/p>\n\n<p>Three days later Soto took off in FAH-609, an F4U-5N that had rolled out of a Connecticut factory during the Second World War and been sold to Honduras in 1956. In the late morning he met a Cavalier Mustang &mdash; a rebuilt P-51D, heavier than the original and worse in a turn &mdash; flown by Capt. Douglas Varela. He shot down the first, flown by Capt. Salvador Ceze&ntilde;a, who bailed out and survived. Then, after what felt to him &ldquo;like a century,&rdquo; he rolled into a split-S onto the tail of the second and shot down Capt. Guillermo Reynaldo Cort&eacute;z, the highest-ranking casualty of the war.<\/p>\n\n<p>Three aircraft. One day. According to Hagedorn and Overall, the Salvadoran air force had eight serviceable combat aircraft that morning. Soto destroyed nearly forty per cent of it before dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Warthunder\/comments\/celcw9\/on_this_day_50_years_ago_the_last_dogfight\/\">On this day, 50 years ago the last dogfight between piston-engined fighters took place<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What the Records Disagree About<\/h2><p>Almost everything else in this story is contested, and honest accounts should say so.<\/p>\n\n<p>How Varela died is disputed: Salvadoran sources say he parachuted and was killed on the ground, Honduran sources say he died in the cockpit, and a third version has his parachute fail. Salvadoran histories say Cort&eacute;z deliberately crashed rather than risk civilians while trying to land a damaged aircraft; Honduran accounts say his Corsair exploded in the air.<\/p>\n\n<p>The casualty figures are worse. El Salvador acknowledged around 107 dead. Honduras officially recorded 99, but the parish priest of Nueva Ocotepeque is said to have counted 400, and internal CIA material reportedly put the toll as high as 1,500. Kapu&#347;ci&#324;ski wrote at the time of 6,000 dead and 12,000 wounded. His obituary in the Honduran paper <em>La Prensa<\/em> reported that he had shot down &ldquo;three Mustangs.&rdquo; He had not: one Mustang and two Corsairs, as the kill markings painted on FAH-609 still show.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Man, and the Silence<\/h2><p>Soto was made a National Hero by the Honduran Congress in 2003, the last living Honduran to hold the title. He flew for the airline SAHSA afterwards and logged over 23,900 hours across 23 types. He died in June 2006, on or around his sixty-seventh birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;He was a very humble man, who lived to serve his country and his people. Trade between the two countries stopped completely, Honduras left the Central American Common Market, and the pressure that sent landless Salvadorans across a border in the first place found no outlet at all. A decade later El Salvador collapsed into civil war.<\/p>\n\n<p>And one more thing. While Salvadoran troops were still on Honduran soil, on 20 July 1969, two men landed on the Moon.
