Instead he stayed with the aircraft and steered it toward the military airfield on the edge of town, and only then did he leave. The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/es\/aeronave\/saab-gripen\/\">Saab JAS 39 Gripen<\/a> burned out on Hungarian Defence Forces ground on Monday morning, 24 August. Nobody else was hurt. Prime Minister P&eacute;ter Magyar, in office since May, put up a short note within minutes of the crash.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;For reasons that are not yet known, a Gripen fighter jet of the Hungarian Defence Forces crashed a few minutes ago near Szolnok. The pilot successfully ejected. An investigation is under way, and the defence minister is on his way to the scene.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>P&eacute;ter Magyar<\/strong> &mdash; Prime Minister of Hungary, writing on Facebook, 24 August 2026<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, a career artillery officer who ran the Hungarian general staff before taking the ministry in May 2026, went straight to the site. The first bulletins that afternoon said the pilot was unhurt. That turned out to be optimistic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>By evening the Military Hospital in Budapest confirmed the major had suffered a spinal injury on the way out of the cockpit and would need surgery. Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Ejecting Is Not Free<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>A Martin-Baker seat fires a pilot clear of a dying aircraft in well under a second, and the price of that speed is compression loading straight down the spine. Vertebral fractures are a recognised outcome of an otherwise textbook ejection, which is why every successful ejection is a survival story rather than an escape without cost.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Ruszin-Szendi said afterwards that the pilot was in good spirits in hospital, and had already been asking when he would be allowed to fly again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Fleet That Had Just Been Completed<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The timing is bitter. Hungary only finished assembling this fleet two months ago. Budapest first took Gripens in 2006 under a lease-purchase deal with Sweden, ran 14 of them for the better part of two decades, and took full ownership at the start of 2026. A 2024 amendment added four more Gripen Cs; the last pair landed at Kecskem&eacute;t on 23 June 2026, bringing the force to 18 aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is 16 single-seat Gripen Cs and two twin-seat Ds guarding the airspace of a NATO member on the alliance&rsquo;s eastern flank. Hungary has committed to operating the type until at least 2036. Losing one airframe is a little over five percent of the fleet, and there is no spare sitting in a hangar to replace it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Reports in Hungarian and Austrian outlets have pointed to a possible technical malfunction, with a hydraulic failure mentioned. None of that is confirmed. The Hungarian Defence Forces have not published a cause, and the investigation is only days old.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Part That Matters<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Fighter jets are lost. Air forces budget for it, insure against it, and write the airframe off. What does not appear in any budget line is the decision a pilot makes in the handful of seconds between knowing the aircraft is finished and knowing he still has some say in where it lands.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Hungary lost a Gripen on Monday, its first in more than a decade. It did not lose a pilot, and Szolnok did not lose anyone either.
