Neither air force has said where, and neither has said who came off better &mdash; which has not stopped anyone from arguing about it.<\/p>\n\n<p>The occasion is <em>Eagles of Civilization 2026<\/em>, the second China&ndash;Egypt joint air exercise, and it is a considerably bigger undertaking than the first.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 24px;margin:24px 0\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px\">Datos r\u00e1pidos<\/p><ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:20px;font-size:15px;line-height:1.6\"><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Ejercicio:<\/strong> Eagles of Civilization 2026 &mdash; second edition (first held April 2025)<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Chinese arrival:<\/strong> Friday 21 August 2026, after a ferry flight of more than 6,000 km<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>First flying day:<\/strong> Reported as Sunday 23 August (Chinese state media says Saturday)<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Chinese aircraft:<\/strong> J-16 fighters, YY-20A tanker, Y-20A transport, KJ-500 AEW&amp;C, Z-20 helicopter<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Egyptian aircraft:<\/strong> Dassault Rafale and MiG-29<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Ubicaci\u00f3n:<\/strong> Not publicly disclosed &mdash; Egypt says only &ldquo;a number of air bases&rdquo;<\/li><li style=\"margin:4px 0\"><strong>Ends:<\/strong> Early September, per China&rsquo;s Ministry of National Defense<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A fighter detachment last year, an air force this year<\/h2>\n\n<p>In 2025 China sent J-10C single-engine fighters. This year it sent a system: the twin-seat J-16 heavy multirole fighter, a YY-20A tanker that refuelled two of them simultaneously on the way in, a Y-20A strategic transport carrying the support tail, a KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft, and a Z-20 helicopter.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is not a goodwill visit. It is a rehearsal for operating a long way from home with your own tanking, your own airborne radar picture and your own logistics &mdash; the capabilities that separate an air force with reach from one without it. The ferry flight alone crossed four countries and took around nine hours, with air-to-air refuelling en route.<\/p>\n\n<p>How many J-16s actually went is less certain than the coverage suggests. Neither Beijing nor Cairo has published numbers. The widely repeated figure of &ldquo;at least six&rdquo; comes from open-source analysts who photographed the formation during a refuelling stop at Karachi on 20 August.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2091747514936697252&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What the J-16 actually is<\/h2>\n\n<p>It is easy to file the J-16 as a copied Flanker and move on, and easy to be wrong doing it. The airframe descends from the Shenyang J-11BS, itself China&rsquo;s indigenised two-seat development of the Su-27, with features carried across from the Su-30MKK &mdash; the refuelling probe, the strengthened landing gear, the strike role. NATO calls it Flanker-N. China calls it <em>Qianlong<\/em>, usually rendered &ldquo;Hidden Dragon&rdquo;.<\/p>\n\n<p>What sits inside is Chinese: WS-10-series engines, a glass cockpit, and an active electronically scanned array radar whose designation has never been made public. It carries the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile. Production estimates vary by source rather more than you would expect &mdash; the Pentagon counted more than 225 in 2023, the IISS more than 280 by the end of that year, and later open-source estimates run past 350.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Although the J-16, deployed by China for this long-range training mission in Egypt, evolved from the original Soviet-era platform, it has been completely transformed and now plays a key role within China&rsquo;s aviation system.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Wang Yanan<\/strong> &mdash; Editor-in-chief, Aerospace Knowledge magazine, quoted by Chinese state outlet Global Times<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Wang is quoted here because his assessment is the one Chinese readers are getting, not because it settles anything. Egypt flies more than 200 F-16s, around 20 Mirage 2000s, 46 MiG-29M and M2s, and a Rafale fleet of roughly 30 and growing from 54 ordered &mdash; American, French and Russian hardware on the same ramps. It hosts the US-led Bright Star exercise. Last year an Egyptian Rafale flew against a US Air Force F-16 during it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Twelve months later the same air force is flying dissimilar combat against Chinese fighters. Very few countries could do both. Fewer still would.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Egypt is known for the diversity of its partnerships and is among the countries that conduct the largest number of joint military exercises. We benefit from them, and so do our partners.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Maj Gen Samir Farag<\/strong> &mdash; Egyptian military and strategic analyst, speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Farag dismissed the suggestion that the exercise signals an imminent arms deal, saying it &ldquo;has nothing to do with that issue&rdquo;. That is worth recording, because rumours of an Egyptian J-10C or J-35 purchase have circulated for years and no order has ever been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What the footage does not tell you<\/h2>\n\n<p>The first flying day was one-versus-one dissimilar air combat, with pilots from both sides briefing each other on their aircraft beforehand and agreeing safety, airspace and emergency procedures. China&rsquo;s air force says the training will progress to two-versus-two and then to larger joint operations.<\/p>\n\n<p>A short clip apparently filmed from a J-16&rsquo;s rear cockpit shows a Rafale manoeuvring close aboard. It is a good clip. It proves nothing. No one has published the rules of engagement, the sensor restrictions, the simulated weapons loadouts or the outcomes &mdash; and without those, any conclusion about which aircraft is better is decoration rather than analysis.<\/p>\n\n<p>The genuinely new facts are narrower and more interesting than a scoreline: a Chinese heavy fighter has operated in Africa for the first time, it did so with its own tanker and airborne radar support, and it trained against a front-line Western fighter flown by a major American security partner.
