Anthony Zinni — US Marine Corps, recounting his conversation with Mohamed Farrah Aidid, PBS FRONTLINE

That is precisely what happened, and it is worth being clear that it was a plan rather than luck.

The rocket-propelled grenade is not an anti-aircraft weapon. Somali fighters reportedly adapted it into one by digging pits that let them elevate the tube almost vertically, fitting time-delay fuzes, and waiting for a helicopter to pass before firing up at its tail rotor from behind. A US Army staff college monograph documents the technique — while conceding in its own endnote that it rests on a single Somali interviewee. Treat it as plausible rather than established.

The physics need no such caution. Lose the tail rotor and the airframe spins under its own main-rotor torque. Both Black Hawks did exactly that.

Super Six-One and Super Six-Four

At 16:20 an RPG hit Super Six-One, flown by Chief Warrant Officer 3 Clifton Wolcott with CW3 Donovan Briley beside him. It spun into a wall three hundred yards from the target building. Both pilots were killed. Two crew chiefs survived, badly wounded, and a Little Bird put down in the alley to pull men out.

Wolcott’s body was pinned in the crushed cockpit. Metal saws broke against the armoured airframe. He was not freed until after dawn, roughly thirteen hours later — and the entire force stayed on that street rather than leave him. That decision, more than any other, is why a thirty-minute raid became an overnight battle.

Super Six-One, Clifton Wolcott’s aircraft, photographed in Somalia before the battle. A seven-man RPG team engaged it deliberately; a gunner knelt in the road and aimed at the tail rotor. The rotor assembly disintegrated and the aircraft went in.

The pilot, CW3 Michael Durant, broke his right femur. His co-pilot CW4 Raymond Frank and crew chiefs Staff Sergeants William Cleveland and Thomas Field were killed.

One post-battle critique is unsparing about this: Task Force Ranger had no immediate-action drill to pull the remaining Black Hawks out of RPG range after the first shoot-down. Super Six-Four was still orbiting twenty minutes later.

Gordon and Shughart

Circling above the second crash site in another aircraft were two Delta snipers, Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart. They asked to be inserted to defend the downed crew. They were refused twice. On the third request they were approved.

The first attempt aborted on debris and ground fire. They were put down a hundred metres away and fought through to the wreck, pulled Durant and his crew clear of the aircraft and set up a perimeter. Then the helicopter providing their fire support was itself hit by an RPG and knocked out of the fight.

“After his team member was fatally wounded, and his own rifle ammunition exhausted, M/Sgt. Over a city full of RPGs and machine guns, that put helicopters inside the envelope of every weapon on the ground.

“The low-level flight profile also reduces fields of observation and fire while placing helicopters well within range of virtually all weapons (small arms, machine guns, and RPG) that the Somalis have. Aircrews from 2-25 ATKBN soon realized that it was much safer and more effective to fly at approximately 1000 feet.”
Maj. Frank W. Tate — US Army School of Advanced Military Studies monograph, drawing on the Task Force Raven after-action report

It took until April 2001 for this to reach a field manual. FM 3-06.1, Aviation Urban Operations, did not exist before Mogadishu; when it appeared it told aircrews to avoid true nap-of-the-earth flight in cities precisely because low and slow puts you within reach of small arms and RPGs.

Other lessons followed: cycle aircraft through a fight rather than massing them over one point, since a city street offers a single gun-target line to everyone on it; and put armour and fire support organic to the raid force rather than relying on a relief column.

And then it had to be learned again

On the night of 23 March 2003, the 11th Attack Helicopter Regiment flew a deep attack near Karbala. Iraqi forces used dispersed RPG and anti-aircraft fire, cued by ground observers with mobile phones. One Apache was lost and twenty-nine returned with fifteen to twenty bullet holes each. The regiment itself described the experience as a classic first-battle dynamic.

Within days the 101st was varying altitude and airspeed and using preparatory fires. Independent deep-attack helicopter operations were quietly abandoned. In Kosovo in 1999, Task Force Hawk’s twenty-four Apaches never flew a combat mission at all.

The strategic consequences were larger still: Presidential Decision Directive 25 in May 1994 codified a new reluctance about intervention that acquired its own name, the Mogadishu effect.

One number is worth keeping in view when reading any of this. American losses were eighteen dead in the battle. Somali casualty estimates range from around two hundred to fifteen hundred, and civilians were among them, including in houses struck by the falling helicopters. Both figures are part of the same night.

President Clinton presenting the Medals of Honor to the families of Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart, May 1994.

Sources: US Army Center of Military History United States Forces, Somalia After Action Report, Congressional Medal of Honor Society, PBS FRONTLINE, Rick Atkinson in the Washington Post, US Army SAMS monographs (Tate 2001, Sangvic 1998), FM 3-06.1

Publicaciones relacionadas

Son Tay: La incursión que no rescató a nadie.

Entebbe: 4.000 kilómetros para rescatar a los rehenes

Aidid’s fighters worked out that the helicopters were the American centre of gravity.
