This week, the consequences arrived: Germany&rsquo;s air-navigation authority has rewritten how the airport&rsquo;s runways are used whenever the military is flying nearby.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reported on 27 August 2026, the change tightens the rules on approaches and departures at Cologne\/Bonn during armed-forces activity &mdash; the airport shares its patch of the Rhineland with a Bundeswehr air base, and the drone the Ryanair crew saw was a military one operating during an exercise, not a hostile intruder.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the fix lands in the middle of a far darker story. Cologne-Wahn is home to the German government&rsquo;s VIP flight service and regular Bundeswehr activity, so civil airliners and military aircraft share the same crowded sky.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This particular scare was a deconfliction failure, not an attack &mdash; a friendly drone in the wrong place at the wrong moment. And currently, they are not in place.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Daniel Niesler<\/strong> &mdash; head of the security working group, Vereinigung Cockpit (German Air Line Pilots&rsquo; Association)<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A country under a drone siege<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cologne rule change would be a footnote were it not for what has been happening elsewhere. In October 2025, Munich Airport was closed twice in two days by drone sightings; a confidential German assessment reported by BILD concluded the aircraft were military-grade reconnaissance drones, not hobbyist toys. Thousands of passengers were stranded.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, in August 2026, an airport worker at Leipzig\/Halle &mdash; a major cargo hub &mdash; spotted a drone carrying an explosive device near the runway, close to a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. What they do is fix the one drone problem an airport can actually control: keeping its own military neighbour&rsquo;s aircraft away from airliners on short final.
