France, Paris signalled, is open to building the continent&rsquo;s next fighter jet together with Sweden.<\/p>\r\n<p>There is no signed programme, no shared design, not even a memorandum &mdash; only an opening. It foundered on a single question: who leads. Dassault, prime contractor for the crewed jet, insisted on being in charge; Airbus refused a subordinate role. In June 2026 Berlin and Paris ended their cooperation, and Germany&rsquo;s chancellor declared the crewed Next Generation Fighter dead.<\/p>\r\n<p>That left France with world-class fighter expertise and no partner. France and Sweden are two of the very few European countries that can design and build a combat aircraft nose to tail. They already collaborated on the nEUROn stealth-drone demonstrator, and their industrial ties are deepening fast: the frigate deal, plus France&rsquo;s own order for two Swedish GlobalEye radar aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We are thereby strengthening the European defence industrial and technological base.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> &mdash; President of France<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The obstacles are just as real. Dassault&rsquo;s insistence on leadership is exactly what sank FCAS, and Saab is not a junior partner by temperament. Sweden has said it will decide on the future of its combat-aviation programme by September 2027, which sets a natural clock on any talks.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">An opening, not a jet<\/h2>\r\n<p>For now this is diplomacy, not engineering. But it hints at how Europe&rsquo;s fractured fighter ambitions may reorganise: not one grand tri-national programme, but smaller coalitions of the willing and the capable. If Paris and Stockholm can avoid the trap that killed FCAS &mdash; the fight over who is in charge &mdash; they might yet build something. If they cannot, this will be remembered as one more handshake that never became an aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px
