The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/es\/aeronave\/xian-h-6\/\">Xian H-6<\/a> is neither. Nearly seventy years after its Soviet ancestor first flew, China is still building, flying, and continually re-arming this jet &mdash; and the latest versions are among the most strategically important aircraft the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army owns.<\/p>\r\n<p>The secret to its longevity is simple: the H-6 stopped being a bomber in the old sense. The first fully Chinese-built example flew on 24 December 1968 from the Xian plant, and in that guise &mdash; the H-6 &mdash; it became the backbone of Chinese strategic aviation. Then China did something clever.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/08Ym6MEGnKU\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">From bomber to missile truck<\/h2>\r\n<p>The clean break came with the H-6K, first flown in 2007. Out went the old glazed navigator&rsquo;s nose, replaced by a solid radar dome; in came a glass cockpit, more efficient turbofan engines for greater range, and six underwing pylons for long-range cruise missiles. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The H-6N features a modified fuselage that allows it to carry externally either a drone or an air-launched ballistic missile that may be nuclear capable.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>U.S. Department of Defense<\/strong> &mdash; China Military Power Report<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The H-6N, in service since 2019, went further still, adding an aerial-refuelling probe and a fuselage recess sized for a large air-launched ballistic missile &mdash; a weapon associated with China&rsquo;s emerging air-based nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h4O2JIYYjTM\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why an old jet still matters<\/h2>\r\n<p>That last upgrade carried outsized significance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;When the H-6N appeared at the 2019 National Day parade, it gave China something it had never actually possessed: a working air leg, and with it a completed nuclear triad.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>China Aerospace Studies Institute<\/strong> &mdash; analysis of the H-6N<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The Pentagon now warns that a force of roughly 120 H-6K and H-6N bombers could saturate the Pacific with long-range and hypersonic anti-ship missiles &mdash; the &lsquo;carrier-killer&rsquo; threat that shapes so much U.S. naval planning. China is developing a genuine stealth bomber, the H-20, to eventually succeed it. But until that arrives, a 1950s design keeps getting new missions, new engines, and new missiles. The airframe is old.
