Fue el primer aterrizaje autom\u00e1tico de un avi\u00f3n comercial en servicio regular de pasajeros, y ocurri\u00f3 en una aeronave de la que la mayor\u00eda de la gente fuera de Gran Breta\u00f1a nunca ha o\u00eddo hablar.<\/p>\r\n<p>El Hawker Siddeley Trident deber\u00eda haber sido el Boeing 727 brit\u00e1nico. Era m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido, m\u00e1s inteligente y pionero en casi todas las tecnolog\u00edas importantes. Se vendieron 117 aviones, mientras que el 727 alcanz\u00f3 cifras de cuatro d\u00edgitos. En 1953, BEA acababa de poner en servicio el primer avi\u00f3n de pasajeros turboh\u00e9lice del mundo y estaba convencida de que las h\u00e9lices eran el futuro sensato. Su director ejecutivo fue tajante respecto a la alternativa.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>\u201cPreferir\u00eda prescindir de ellos.\u201d<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Anthony Milward<\/strong> \u2014 Director ejecutivo de BEA, sobre aviones a reacci\u00f3n, abril de 1956<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Lo que le hizo cambiar de opini\u00f3n fue franc\u00e9s. El Sud Aviation Caravelle ya hab\u00eda volado y se perfilaba como un serio competidor, y BEA se dio cuenta de que necesitaba algo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>\u201cBEA buscaba algo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que el Caravelle, que amenazaba con convertirse en un competidor muy fuerte.\u201d<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Derek Wood<\/strong> \u2014 Autor especializado en aviaci\u00f3n, sobre los or\u00edgenes del requisito de la BEA<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>En julio de 1956, la aerol\u00ednea emiti\u00f3 los requisitos generales para un avi\u00f3n a reacci\u00f3n de segunda generaci\u00f3n de corto alcance: aproximadamente 70 pasajeros, 1.000 millas de alcance, pistas de 6.000 pies, una velocidad de crucero muy alta y, lo que era de suma importancia, &quot;m\u00e1s de dos motores&quot;. Ante una recesi\u00f3n, la aerol\u00ednea decidi\u00f3 que necesitaba un avi\u00f3n m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o y de menor alcance, y de Havilland accedi\u00f3. El Medway fue reemplazado por el Spey, menos potente, y el avi\u00f3n se redujo para adaptarse a las previsiones revisadas de un cliente.<\/p>\r\n<p>Boeing, que dise\u00f1aba el 727 al mismo tiempo, hizo lo contrario. Construy\u00f3 un avi\u00f3n adaptado a un mercado espec\u00edfico, no a una aerol\u00ednea, y le dot\u00f3 de la capacidad de operar en casi cualquier lugar. Cuando el Trident entr\u00f3 en servicio en abril de 1964, el 727 ya lo hab\u00eda superado en dos meses y ofrec\u00eda m\u00e1s asientos, mayor autonom\u00eda y requisitos de pista m\u00e1s cortos.<\/p>\r\n<p>El Trident tambi\u00e9n era un avi\u00f3n exigente en d\u00edas calurosos. Su ala estaba optimizada para un n\u00famero Mach cr\u00edtico de 0,93 y generaba relativamente poca sustentaci\u00f3n a baja velocidad; sumado a una modesta relaci\u00f3n empuje-peso, esto implicaba largas carreras de despegue. Cumpl\u00eda con el criterio de 6000 pies de la BEA, pero no con el est\u00e1ndar de 4500 pies que se adopt\u00f3 posteriormente.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">La parte en la que estaba d\u00e9cadas adelantado<\/h2>\r\n<p>Nada de esto debe eclipsar lo que el Trident logr\u00f3 realmente. Hawker Siddeley y Smiths Aircraft Instruments le construyeron un sistema de aterrizaje autom\u00e1tico a ciegas capaz de realizar la aproximaci\u00f3n, el aterrizaje, el contacto con la pista y el rodaje.<\/p>\r\n<p>El primer aterrizaje autom\u00e1tico en servicio regular del mundo tuvo lugar el 10 de junio de 1965. El primer aterrizaje verdaderamente a ciegas se produjo el 4 de noviembre de 1966. El Trident contaba con un mapa m\u00f3vil en el panel central, un l\u00e1piz \u00f3ptico que trazaba la trayectoria de la aeronave en una carta de papel motorizada, basada en datos de velocidad respecto al suelo y deriva Doppler. Fue tambi\u00e9n el primer avi\u00f3n comercial equipado con una grabadora de datos de vuelo de acceso r\u00e1pido, que registraba digitalmente 64 variables en cinta magn\u00e9tica para su an\u00e1lisis en tierra; el antecesor directo de la monitorizaci\u00f3n de datos de vuelo moderna.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">El ala que sobrevivi\u00f3 al avi\u00f3n.<\/h2>\r\n<p>La aerodin\u00e1mica del Trident fue desarrollada por un equipo liderado por Richard Clarkson, quien gan\u00f3 el Premio Mullard en 1969 por este trabajo. Posteriormente, utiliz\u00f3 el ala del Trident como punto de partida para el dise\u00f1o del ala del Airbus A300.<\/p>\r\n<p>As\u00ed, el avi\u00f3n que perdi\u00f3 el mercado de vuelos de corta distancia frente a Boeing sent\u00f3 las bases del avi\u00f3n que dio origen a Airbus. El Trident fue retirado en 1995 tras 31 a\u00f1os de servicio.
