Construido en Dallas como un P-51C-10-NT, fue comprado despu\u00e9s de la guerra por el piloto de acrobacias de Hollywood Paul Mantz, pintado de rojo y nombrado <em>Resplandor del mediod\u00eda<\/em>. Mantz gan\u00f3 con \u00e9l la carrera transcontinental del Trofeo Bendix en 1946 y de nuevo en 1947. Renombrado y pilotado por otros, qued\u00f3 segundo en 1948 y tercero en 1949.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mantz hab\u00eda hecho algo dr\u00e1stico para que eso fuera posible. Retir\u00f3 los tanques autosellantes est\u00e1ndar de 90 galones y convirti\u00f3 toda el ala en un tanque de combustible: un ala h\u00fameda. El 31 de enero de 1951, vol\u00f3 con \u00e9l desde Nueva York hasta Londres en 7 horas y 48 minutos, alcanzando una velocidad media de 446 mph y ascendiendo hasta los 37.000 pies en un caza monoplaza sin presurizar.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fue una \u00e9poca extraordinaria para un avi\u00f3n con motor de pist\u00f3n. Nunca fue un r\u00e9cord oficial, porque nadie hab\u00eda dispuesto que la Federaci\u00f3n Aeron\u00e1utica Internacional lo conmemorara.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Navegar hacia donde apunta la br\u00fajula<\/h2>\r\n<p>El problema polar es sencillo de plantear, pero extremadamente dif\u00edcil de resolver. Cerca del polo magn\u00e9tico, una br\u00fajula magn\u00e9tica se desv\u00eda o simplemente apunta al suelo. En 1951 no hab\u00eda sat\u00e9lites, ni tampoco radiobalizas sobre el oc\u00e9ano \u00c1rtico.<\/p>\r\n<p>La soluci\u00f3n de Blair fue navegar gui\u00e1ndose por el sol. Trabajando con el capit\u00e1n Philip Van Horn Weems, el oficial retirado de la Marina estadounidense que hab\u00eda dedicado su carrera a convertir la navegaci\u00f3n astron\u00f3mica en una herramienta \u00fatil para pilotos a alta velocidad, mand\u00f3 calcular con antelaci\u00f3n una serie de l\u00edneas solares para posiciones y momentos espec\u00edficos. Norte a lo largo del meridiano 20 este, cruzar el Polo a 22 000 pies, sur por el meridiano 160 oeste hasta la latitud 70 norte, y luego girar hacia el sureste en direcci\u00f3n a Fairbanks. Si las l\u00edneas solares eran incorrectas, o si volaba mal, no hab\u00eda aer\u00f3dromo alternativo ni posibilidad de rescate.<\/p>\r\n<p>No se equivocaban. \u00c9l lleg\u00f3.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Lo que demostr\u00f3<\/h2>\r\n<p>El presidente Truman le entreg\u00f3 a Blair el Trofeo Internacional Harmon en la Casa Blanca el 18 de noviembre de 1952. Este premio existe precisamente para este tipo de logros.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>\u201cLos logros internacionales m\u00e1s destacados en el arte y\/o la ciencia de la aeron\u00e1utica del a\u00f1o anterior, otorg\u00e1ndose la m\u00e1xima consideraci\u00f3n al arte de volar.\u201d<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Criterios del Trofeo Harmon<\/strong> \u2014 Citado para el vuelo transpolar de Charles Blair en 1951<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>La consecuencia pr\u00e1ctica fue mayor que el logro en s\u00ed. Blair hab\u00eda demostrado que la ruta polar era navegable y, por lo tanto, comercialmente viable. En pocos a\u00f1os, las aerol\u00edneas sobrevolaban el Polo Norte, reduciendo considerablemente los tiempos de vuelo entre Europa y Asia, y entre Europa y la costa oeste. Las fuerzas a\u00e9reas de la Guerra Fr\u00eda tambi\u00e9n prestaban atenci\u00f3n: en 1959, siendo ya general de brigada en la Reserva de la Fuerza A\u00e9rea, Blair lider\u00f3 dos F-100 Super Sabre en un vuelo sin escalas desde Inglaterra hasta Alaska sobre el Polo Norte.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sigui\u00f3 volando hasta el final. Blair falleci\u00f3 el 2 de septiembre de 1978 cuando un Grumman Goose que pilotaba para su propia aerol\u00ednea, Antilles Air Boats, sufri\u00f3 una aver\u00eda en el motor poco despu\u00e9s del despegue en el Caribe. Ten\u00eda 69 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\r\n<p>El Excalibur III fue donado al Smithsonian por Pan American en 1952. Ahora se exhibe en el Centro Udvar-Hazy, restaurado y a\u00fan rojo.
