This week it flew its first passengers to Bangkok &mdash; the newest thread in a network that Saudi Arabia intends to stretch across the planet.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">On September 2, the kingdom's from-scratch flag carrier opened a direct link between Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport and Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi, flown by one of its indigo Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners three times a week. It is a modest slot on paper &mdash; and a loud statement of intent.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">Bangkok is one of three destinations Riyadh Air is switching on this month, pushing its map from eleven cities to fourteen. It launched full commercial operations only this year, and already runs a fleet of six 787-9s with dozens more on the way.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">The cabins are the pitch. Each 290-seat Dreamliner carries four cabin classes, topped by a \"Business Elite\" suite with a sliding door and a 32-inch 4K screen that the airline bills as the largest in any business cabin. Bangkok joins Manila and Manchester on this month's launch list, with Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore among the Asian cities the airline has flagged for the future.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">The ambition is spelled out in the timetable: 22 destinations by March 2027, and more than 100 by 2030. Whether Riyadh Air can carve room in a market already fought over by Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad is the open question. But the strategy is unmistakable &mdash; plant premium long-haul flags fast, and let the network do the talking.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">One 787 on a thrice-weekly rotation will not reshape Gulf aviation. A hundred destinations by the end of the decade might.
