The Douglas F5D Skylancer was cancelled because it was too good, too late, and built by the wrong company. But Douglas reworked it so thoroughly &mdash; a thinner wing, a longer fuselage, a more powerful J57 &mdash; that the result was effectively a new aircraft, and earned its own designation. It was fast, clean and, by all accounts, a delight to fly.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">On paper and in the air it did everything asked of it. The problem was timing. The Navy had already committed to Chance Vought's <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-8-crusader\/\">F8U Crusader<\/a>, a supersonic fighter filling the same role. But many historians see another factor. Douglas already built a huge share of the Navy's aircraft &mdash; the Skyray, the A-4 Skyhawk, the Skywarrior. It was one of those decisions where the losing aircraft was arguably the finer machine &mdash; and everyone involved seemed to know it.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sCctkin87JM\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\"><em>Original footage of the Skylancer's first flight at Edwards.<\/em><\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Neil Armstrong's spaceplane rehearsal<\/h2><p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">The four orphaned Skylancers were too good to scrap, so NASA took them on. And in 1960 a NASA test pilot named Neil Armstrong &mdash; nine years before Apollo 11 &mdash; realised the F5D was oddly perfect for a very specific job. Its wing planform and glide characteristics closely matched the X-20 Dyna-Soar, the U.S. Air Force's planned rocket-launched spaceplane.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;NASA used the F5D in this program because it had similar aerodynamics to the Dyna-Soar X-20 space plane, making it ideal for developing emergency abort procedures.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>NASA<\/strong> &mdash; on the F5D and the X-20 Dyna-Soar program<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 18px\">Armstrong flew the Skylancer repeatedly to develop launch-abort manoeuvres for the Dyna-Soar &mdash; how a pilot might glide a stricken spaceplane back to a runway. Dyna-Soar was cancelled before it ever flew, and Armstrong went to the Moon by a different road.
