The US has already lost a significant share of its MQ-9 Reaper fleet in operations against Iran, and the Air Force said this week it is accelerating a cheaper replacement drone at a target price of around $10 million a copy. Missions like Saturday&rsquo;s are precisely the sort of work that burns through attritable aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Where this goes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The wider picture is grim. Fighting resumed about a week ago after roughly a month of relative calm. At least five people were killed earlier in the week in a US bombardment of southern Iran, including a strike that hit a wedding. Negotiations that followed a memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June collapsed soon afterwards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz, which everyone treated as an international waterway before February, is now the contested object. Tehran is asserting control over who passes; Washington is escorting ships through and, as of Saturday, sinking the vessels that pay for the effort. Traffic through the strait remains far below normal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A day before the strikes, President Trump described the war with Iran to reporters as &ldquo;small potatoes&rdquo;.
